Brogden Middle School

DURHAM, NC – Brogden Middle School has been selected as one of Durham Public Schools’ newest Full Service Community Schools, expanding a powerful partnership with Student U and strengthening support for students, families, and the broader community.

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Brogden will join a growing network of schools across Durham leading the way in creating school environments that serve as hubs of opportunity, connection, and support.

As part of this expansion, Brogden Middle School will receive:

  • A fully funded Community School Coordinator to support school and community partnerships

  • The creation of a Family Resource Center, providing access to food, clothing, and hygiene supplies

  • Additional funding to support school-based services and programming, guided by a School Advisory Board made up of staff, families, and community members

  • A strengthened focus on the four pillars of Community Schools:

    • Integrated Student Supports (mental and physical health services)

    • Expanded and Enriched Learning Time (tutoring, after-school programs, and enrichment opportunities)

    • Collaborative Leadership and Practice (staff support, wellness, and professional development)

    • Family and Community Engagement (strong partnerships and shared decision-making)

At its core, the Community Schools model transforms schools into centers of support where students and families have access to the resources they need to thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Principal Desirae Smith shared:

“We are excited to deepen our partnership with Student U as part of the Community Schools initiative. This collaboration reflects our commitment to ‘Our Brogden’—ensuring that every student and family is supported through strong relationships, access to resources, and a shared investment in student success.”

This opportunity positions Brogden Middle School to further its mission of supporting the whole child and the whole family, aligning with the school’s vision of building a connected and empowered community.

Durham Public Schools continues to be a leader in advancing the Community Schools model across North Carolina. With the addition of Brogden and Carrington Middle Schools, more students across Durham will have access to expanded supports and opportunities designed to help them succeed.
