Asynchronous Remote Learning

Asynchronous Remote Learning Plan
Intentional Today, Transformational Tomorrow

Overview

Asynchronous remote learning allows Carrington Middle School students and staff to remain connected to instruction while working from home during inclement weather, emergencies, or district-authorized remote learning days. Students will complete independent learning activities, while teachers provide clear guidance, accessible materials, and consistent communication. This plan ensures continuity of learning in alignment with DPS curriculum expectations and Carrington’s core values.

Families may access each teacher’s Canvas page and office hours using the following link: Teacher Canvas Links and Office Hours

Attendance and Engagement

Students will be marked Present – Off-Site (1R) when they demonstrate meaningful engagement in learning activities assigned for the asynchronous remote day. Evidence of engagement may include:

  • Submitting an assignment digitally or upon returning to school

  • Participating in a phone call, email exchange, or Apptegy message with the teacher

  • Completing a teacher-provided check-in or attendance form

  • Engaging in a class-related task that demonstrates learning

Attendance may be updated within five in-person school days if a student submits work or provides engagement evidence after the remote day.

Teacher Responsibilities

Teachers will use Canvas as the primary platform for posting assignments, sharing resources, and communicating with students. During asynchronous remote learning days, teachers will:

  • Communicate expectations for the day, including learning objectives, activities, and due dates

  • Provide printed packets or take-home tasks for students without device access or whose device is under repair

  • Post all assignments and materials in Canvas by the start of the school day

  • Upload brief recorded explanations, review clips, or sample problems when appropriate

  • Monitor student participation and engagement

  • Provide a daily check-in opportunity through Canvas, email, or a short digital form

  • Track attendance

  • Reinforce previously taught content (no new standards introduced on asynchronous days)

  • Respond to student and family messages during regular school hours

  • Grade and return assignments with timely feedback

  • Communicate concerns about student progress and collaborate with support staff as needed

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to manage their learning independently and stay connected with their teachers. During asynchronous remote learning days, students will:

  • Log into Canvas and check each class homepage for assignments and instructions

  • Complete all activities and assignments within the expected timelines

  • Participate in check-ins or complete daily attendance forms provided by teachers

  • Reach out to teachers via Canvas or email for support or clarification

  • Submit assignments within five days of returning to school

  • Follow Carrington’s code of conduct when using school-issued devices and online platforms

Parent and Guardian Expectations

Families play an important role in supporting student success during asynchronous learning. Parents and guardians should:

  • Monitor their child’s engagement and assignment completion

  • Establish consistent routines to support independent learning

  • Contact teachers or the school for support or materials as needed

  • Ensure appropriate and responsible device use at home

  • Stay informed by reviewing teacher messages in Canvas, email, and Apptegy/Rooms

Support for Day Users

Per the DPS Chromebook Policy, some Carrington students are designated as day users* and do not take Chromebooks home. On Asynchronous Learning Days, these students will receive a paper learning packet. The packet serves as a substitute for online assignments, ensuring equitable access to instruction for all learners.

*Support for Current Day User Students -Any student who does not currently take a computer home, including students whose issued computer is out for repairs.

Support Services for Exceptional Children and Multilingual Learners

All support services will continue in alignment with student needs and district expectations. During asynchronous remote learning days:

  • When whole-class assignments are posted digitally, EC staff will provide individualized or small-group follow-up to maintain access and progress

  • EC and ESL teachers will collaborate with general education teachers to ensure assignments reflect IEP goals, accommodations, and modifications

  • Modified materials or supplemental resources will be posted in Canvas or provided directly to families

  • EC teachers may follow up with students using email, phone, or recorded support materials

  • EC services will remain aligned with the instructional requirements outlined in student IEPs
