Application Submission and Lottery Notification Process
2021-2022 Magnet Application and CTE Pathway Timeline – January 11th – February 5th, 5 p.m.
Eligibility Requirements: Applications submitted outside of the eligibility requirements below will be deemed ineligible upon determination.
- The person submitting a magnet school/program/pathway application must be the parent, legal guardian/custodian or applicant (18 years of age or older).
- The parent, legal guardian/custodian or applicant (18 years of age or older) must maintain a continuous domicile status (permanently residing) in Durham from the date of application submission to be eligible to submit a lottery application for a student (except those applying for Middle College at Durham Technical Community College, who are eligible for enrollment in Orange County or Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools).
Step 1. Create an online account with your e-mail address and password or smartphone number and password or log back into your previous account.
Please note that if you opt to create an online account using your smartphone number, all application and lottery communications will be sent to you via text messages. Therefore, you must agree to be responsible for accepting text messages. If not, please create an account using an e-mail address.
Step 2. If your student is a current DPS student, you may opt to enter his/her PowerSchool Student ID Number to pre-populate the student/parent information fields, or you may manually enter these data fields. Non-DPS applicants must manually enter these application fields.
Step 3. Select a maximum of 3 Magnet Schools/CTE Pathways, ranking them in priority order. Review the highlighted red text under each selection, outlining the lottery priorities (sibling, priority zones, program links, and base school priorities), bell schedule and transportation services. This information may impact your school/program selections, and the order in which you rank them for the lottery.
- Applicants who are eligible to receive a lottery priority must rank the school/program as their first choice in order to receive the priority. Failure to do so will forfeit the priority during the lottery

Step 4. Complete the parent information and signature page and submit your application(s) by the published deadline. You may alter your application(s) only during the application window.
Lottery Notification Process and Timeline
- March 1, 2021 - Lottery notification results will be posted on the Parent Dashboard of the parent/guardian SmartChoice Application
- March 19, 2021, 5:00 p.m. – If a student is assigned to a lottery seat, the parent/guardian must accept or decline their student(s) assignment. Lottery assignments not accepted or declined by this deadline will be automatically marked as a declined seat. If an applicant accepts a lottery assignment, his/her name will be removed from all other lottery application wait list(s). Declined seats are final and cannot be
- Assigned applicants - Applicants may decline a lottery assignment and remain wait-listed for other school/program/pathway applied
- Wait listed applicants - Applicants will be notified through the parent e-mail account if a lottery seat becomes available, and their student is assigned. Wait-listed students are moved forward approximately every two weeks, beginning the first week of
- Assignment Deadline - Applicants not assigned to a school/program on March 1st will remain wait-listed until the assignment deadline of June 30th or last business day of June for Calendar Magnet Schools and July 31st, or last business day of July for Program Magnet Schools and CTE
- Exceptional Children’s Programs (ECP) - ECP may override lottery assignments for students whose IEP teams indicate the need for a separate/self-contained

NOTE: Virtual Registration is not a drop-in/out event. Please report on time and plan to stay the entire time of the Orientation/Registration/Music Placement session.
