Portrait of Caroline Vaverek, Northern High School's new librarian of excellence

Spotlight on Excellence for School Library Month!

Meet Caroline Vaverek, the Media Coordinator at Northern High School! Now in her third year as a School Library Media Coordinator—and her first at the high school level—Caroline brings a deep passion for storytelling and the belief that stories shape who we are and who we can become. Becoming a librarian was a long-held dream, and she values every opportunity to connect students with stories that can impact their lives.

At Northern, Caroline has led engaging programs that connect students with both history and future possibilities. During Black History Month, she spearheaded a Divine Nine Museum, inviting staff members who are alumni of Divine Nine fraternities and sororities to share artifacts alongside the histories of their organizations, helping students envision themselves in higher education.

April is an exciting time in the library as Caroline celebrates School Library Month and National Poetry Month. Working with her co-librarian, Mr. Peters, she is expanding a long-standing tradition by creating Knight’s Tales, a published collection of poetry written by both students and staff that highlights student voice and builds community.

Through her work, Caroline continues to grow her practice of culturally responsive librarianship, adapting her teaching, programs, and collection to reflect and support the students she serves.
