Each class has a scheduled weekly media time. To encourage positive reading habits and to refine information skills, students are encouraged to visit the Media Center often. There are several times each day students can return and check out books. Kindergartners begin the year checking out one book at a time and will be able to check out two books at a time during the second half of the school year. First and second graders may check out two books at a time. Third, fourth and fifth graders may check out three resources to read for pleasure as well as additional resources they may need to support classroom assignments. There are dictionaries, encyclopedias and almanacs for students to check out and two Internet ready computers for students to access while in the Media Center.
Books may be checked out for two weeks, but students are encouraged to return them as soon as they have read them. After two weeks, books are "overdue" and no other resources may be checked out until overdue items are returned.
Students are encouraged to be responsible for prompt return of their library books as well as care of library resources. If yor child misplaces a book, please send a note saying you are aware it is missing. Your child can continue to check out books and a bill will be sent only as a last resort. If a book is lost, or damaged beyond repair, it must be paid for so that a replacement copy can be purchased.
Any parent may request a library card to check out resources from Mangum's Library Media Center. Contact Kevin McKee, the Mangum Media Coordinator, at christopher_mckee@dpsnc.net, to provide you with the necessary information.
