Health & Physical Education

Required  6th,7th,8th

This course exposes students to a total education of their physical, mental, social and emotional health & wellness. Physical Education focuses on lessons of cooperation, participation and sportsmanship alongside fitness and movement skills. Students learn basic rules and concepts needed to participate in various team and lifetime sports, and work towards personal fitness goals. Health Education provides students with accurate health and wellness information and to empower them to use in their daily lives and futures. Students engage in the following content: mental health, nutrition, alcohol and drugs, safety, and relationships.

Beginning Band

6th & 7th

This is a yearlong course focused on learning how to read music and play an instrument. Prior musical experience is not required. Students will be able to choose from Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion. In their second year of playing they will have even more instruments to choose from! As a part of the band program, students will have the opportunity to perform concerts, play solos, and go on field trips.

Band Grade 7

7th

7th grade band is available for any student with at least one year of band experience. This course focuses on developing instrumental skills even further, expanding student opportunities for performance and travel. 7th grade band students can audition for county and region honors bands and compete in solo and small ensemble contests. Students may also learn a secondary instrument.

Band Grade 8

8th grade band is available for students with at least one year of band experience. 8th grade band students continue to develop skills in preparation for high school band. Students focus on developing self-discipline, confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. As the top ensemble, students may have opportunities to represent LMS in contests, festivals, competitions & auditions.

Vocal Ensemble (Chorus)

6th,7th,8th

Lucas’s chorus has opportunities for everyone! Whether you have sung in a choir before or not, chorus is open to everyone. With your talents, you may have the opportunity to represent our school in contests, festivals, competitions and auditions

General Music

6th,7th,8th

General music is a course that focuses on learning the history of music, genres, composers and artists of various musical styles.

Visual Arts

6th,7th,8th

Students will use the elements of art and principles of design, 2D media, such as drawing and painting, basic 3D media and digital media to create their own work. Students will also learn to communicate effectively using appropriate vocabulary, generate solutions to artistic problems and to use observation skills of the immediate environment to create original imagery. 

Middle School Spanish

6th & 7th

This course introduces basic vocabulary and simple language structures on the novice low level of exit language proficiency to communicate on a variety of familiar topics relating to home and school. Students develop an appreciation for how languages & cultures work by comparing the target language and culture(s) to their own.

Spanish 1A & 1B

8th

Prerequisite: Students must pass Middle School Spanish.

Students develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with emphasis placed on interpersonal communication and proficiency. Students will be learning on the novice low & mid-levels of language exit proficiency expectations. This is the first half of the high school Level 1 course. Students continue to develop the four skills using increasingly complex structures. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal communication and proficiency. This is the second half of the high school Level 1 course. Students who successfully complete both Part 1 and Part 2 may receive one high school credit, pending results of the course final exam.

Spanish Heritage 1A & 1B

8th

Prerequisite: Students must be determined to be heritage/native speakers of Spanish and pass Middle School Spanish.

This course is for high school Spanish I and continues to introduce students to the target language and its culture. This class develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with emphasis placed on interpersonal communication and proficiency. Students will acquire skills through real-world situations and use their experiences to practice these skills. Students develop an appreciation for how languages and cultures work by comparing the target language and culture(s) to their own. Classes conducted primarily in the target language. Students will learn on the Novice Low & Novice Mid-levels of language proficiency. Students must achieve a pass Level I Part A to enroll in Part B. Part B is taught entirely in the target language. Part B is the final half of the high school Level I course. Students will learn on the Intermediate Low-Intermediate Mid-levels of proficiency according to the NC World Language Essential Standards. Students who successfully complete both Part 1 & Part 2 may receive one high school credit, pending results of the course final exam.

Exploring Environment & Nat Resources

6th

Students gain understanding of the relationship between natural resources and the production of food and fiber, including the role of alternative energy in the agricultural industry. An emphasis on environmental stewardship within the agricultural industry as it impacts plant and animal production helps students engage in practicing strategies for effectively using resources in the agricultural industry. Work-based learning opportunities and leadership development engage students in the development of their career development plan.

Exploring Animal & Plant Science

7th

Students gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the animal and plant science industry. Through hands-on activities, students understand the importance of animal/plant product uses, animal welfare and care practices, and basic plant physiology. Opportunities and leadership development engage students in the development of their career development plan.

Exploring Food & Agricultural Products

8th

Students become informed consumers of food and agricultural products by understanding the processes to provide safe agricultural products for consumption. Processes covered include converting agricultural products into food and fiber products and marketing and labeling principles that help consumers. Work-based learning opportunities and leadership development engage students in the development of their career development plan.
