As students transition into summer, Durham Public Schools wants to ensure that important support services are still available for those who need them. DPS Student Support Services has created a list of resources for families to know where to turn if a young person is experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, substance use concerns, family conflict, or a mental health crisis.
Some valuable resources available for DPS students and families include:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
Students and families can call, text, or chat 988 for free, confidential support 24/7. This is available for anyone experiencing emotional distress, thoughts of suicide, or concern for someone else. Learn more from NC DHHS.
North Carolina Crisis Services
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services maintains a statewide crisis services page with options for urgent mental health, substance use, family and social stressors, and community-based support. Visit NC Crisis Services.
Mobile Crisis Teams
For behavioral health crises where in-person support may be needed, families can search by county or ZIP code for a mobile crisis team that can come to a safe location in the community. Find a Mobile Crisis Team.
Behavioral Health Urgent Care and Community Crisis Centers
Families can locate walk-in or facility-based crisis options for immediate behavioral health support that may be an alternative to the emergency department when appropriate. Find Community Crisis Centers.
North Carolina Peer Warmline
For non-emergency emotional support, individuals can call 855-PEERS-NC (733-7762) to speak with a certified peer support specialist. Learn more through NC DHHS Open to Care.
NAMI North Carolina Youth and Family Resources
NAMI North Carolina offers information and support resources for children, teens, young adults, and families navigating mental health concerns. Visit NAMI NC: Kids, Teens and Young Adults.
For any life-threatening emergency, families should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
