Opening Doors for Students

On November 6th, students and families gathered at the Emily K Center for Black Futures Forward, a college and community resource fair created to guide young people toward their next steps after high school. The event, led by organizer Ms. Nephitearya from the Durham School of Technology, brought together colleges, nonprofits, and local educational partners to help students explore future opportunities. Ms. Nephitearya explained that Black Futures Forward is designed to "show students what's possible while connecting them with the people and programs that can help them get there." Students were able to engage with representatives from colleges and community organizations, ask questions about academic programs, and discover opportunities they may not have previously known about.

Strengthening Family Support and Moving Forward

Throughout the evening, students participated in workshops covering mental health strategies, financial aid guidance, and preparation for life beyond high school. These sessions aimed to give students both the practical and emotional tools they need as they plan their next steps. Ms. K, a college advisor at Riverside High School, shared that "bringing these resources directly to students helps them take the first step toward their futures. Events like this help students learn about the programs available to them and what each school can offer." She emphasized that understanding financial aid, academic expectations, and college supports early on helps students navigate the path more confidently. Parents and guardians also attended the workshops, asking questions and learning alongside their students about admissions, scholarships, and support services available throughout Durham.
