Pre-k Children

Attention families who have students starting kindergarten for the 2025-26 school year! DPS has some important information you need to know to get your child properly enrolled and off to a great start.

Monday, July 21 is the first day of school for our year-round calendar schools, with schools on the traditional calendar starting Monday, Aug. 25.

The DPS Countdown to Kindergarten is under way, and our goal is for families and students to be fully prepared when they walk through the doors of DPS and into the rest of their lives.

This week, we are focusing on what parents and guardians need to have completed and in hand for their child to be able to get started on Day One. Remember that your child must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2025.

We are excited to announce that beginning with the 2025-26 school year, all North Carolina public schools are transitioning to a new student information system, NCSIS powered by Infinite Campus. This system will replace PowerSchool as your “one-stop-shop” for grades, attendance, and other important school information. You will enroll your child using this system and by following the steps on our Enrollment site.

To register your child for kindergarten, you will need:

  1. Your child’s birth certificate

  2. Proof of immunizations

  3. N.C. Health Assessment form

  4. Proof of legal domicile

In the meantime, we encourage you to visit DPS Countdown to Kindergarten and Preparing for Kindergarten on our website. Here, you will find all the information for a successful enrollment experience, including a school locator which will assist you in determining the school your child will attend.

We also remind families of our fun and exciting Countdown to Kindergarten event, to be held Tuesday, July 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Museum of Life and Science, 433 W. Murray Ave. in Durham! This event is designed to assist families in registering their children for kindergarten, plus offering helpful information for students regarding what they need to know and can expect to learn in kindergarten.
