Durham Public Schools is proud to share that Board of Education member Bettina Umstead has been appointed to serve on Governor Josh Stein’s newly formed Advisory Council on Student Safety and Well-Being.
The council, announced Monday at Moore Square Magnet Middle School, brings together educators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement officials from across North Carolina. Its goal is to develop and support policies that ensure students can learn in safe, healthy, and supportive environments. The council will be co-chaired by Senate Democratic Leader Sydney Batch, Deputy Secretary of Public Safety William "Billy" Lassiter, and 2024 North Carolina Teacher of the Year Heather Smith.
“North Carolina’s children are our future, and it is crucial that they grow and learn in a safe environment that sets them on the right trajectory to thrive,” said Governor Stein. “I am proud to establish this council of educators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement to identify ways to better keep our classrooms safe and our children healthy.”
Bettina Umstead brings a strong commitment to public education, equity, and student well-being to the table. Her experience and leadership in Durham will contribute to the council’s efforts to create safer schools and improve student outcomes across the state.
The council’s first priority will focus on addressing cell phone use in classrooms, working with the General Assembly to support schools in developing and implementing policies that foster focused and distraction-free learning.
We congratulate Bettina on this important appointment and thank her for her continued dedication to the students, families, and educators of Durham Public Schools.
