Driver Education Classes

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY:
To take Driver Education with Durham Public Schools, a student must be 14 ½ years of age on the first day of class and:
Attend a Durham Public School
Attend a Charter school in Durham County
Attend a private school located in Durham County
Attend a registered home school located in Durham County.
HOW TO REGISTER FOR DRIVER EDUCATION
Students who attend a DPS school will register using the link provided on the registration tab on the DPS website or by using the link on their DPS school's website.
Students who attend a school located in Durham County but not a Durham Public School will register using the Non-DPS registration link on the DPS website.
Students who register for Driver Education at a school where they are not enrolled will not be allowed to take the class and must wait six months before registering again.
The registration links will be specific to each class. Therefore bookmarking the link will not be a successful way to register.
HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS:
To be eligible to take a Durham Public School Driver Education class, students need to provide proof of registration for their home school. To do this, the administrator of the home school will log into their account and print the “Non-Public Education Verification Record." Students need to provide this form via email after contacted by the coordinator of Driver Education for Non-DPS students.
PAYING FOR DRIVER EDUCATION:
Beginning January 2026, students will pay for Driver Education electronically when they register. The cost is $45 plus the service fee.
DISMISSAL:
Students who are dismissed from a Driver Education class due to behavior or attendance problems, students who register but do not show up for class, or students who fail the class will not be allowed to register for another Driver Education class with DPS for a period of six months.
