🎒 Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year – Starts Today! 🚍 Durham, let’s kick off the school year right! The annual “Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year” school supply drive begins today, running through August 8. Our good friends at the DPS Foundation will be leading the effort in restocking the shelves at Crayons2Calculators so every DPS teacher has the tools needed—completely free—for student success 📝📚 What’s happening: Community-wide efforts to gather essential supplies—pencils, notebooks, art tools, rulers, folders, tissue, and more. Drop-off bins are set up around the city (libraries, churches, businesses) and at Crayons2Calculators warehouse, 808 Bacon St., open Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11 am–3 pm. Prefer to support digitally? Financial donations help purchase high-need items efficiently. Why it matters: Last year, Crayons2Calculators distributed over $129,000 in supplies, supporting 96% of DPS teachers at 59 schools—and many teachers still spend hundreds out-of-pocket. 👉 How YOU can help: Donate supplies: drop off at Crayons2Calculators or community bins. Give online: support via financial contributions. Share & volunteer: host your own drive or help pack supplies. Let’s come together and ensure no teacher—or student—goes without this school year. 🔗 Visit www.fillthebus.org for more details and a full list of needed items. #FillThatBus #DPSStrong #FuelTheYear #Crayons2Calculators

🚌📚 Lakewood Students Take Their Voices to Raleigh! 🗣️🏛️ Lakewood Elementary students recently headed to the state legislature for Lobby Day, and they came ready to speak truth to power. Alongside their teacher and Media Coordinator Turquoise LeJeune Parker, students met with lawmakers to advocate for: 🔹 More school counselors and nurses 🔹 Foreign language instruction 🔹 Fair pay for bus drivers, cafeteria staff, and custodians 🔹 More funding for books and learning resources 💬 “This is a wonderful chance for students to learn about how the government works, see democracy in action, and understand how their voices can help shape the future.” – Ms. Parker These young advocates are already making a difference. The future is bright—and vocal! #DPSProud #StudentVoicesMatter #LakewoodElementary #LobbyDay #PublicEducation #WeAreDPS

🚨 Big News from Lakewood Elementary! 🚨 Lakewood has officially been named a 2024-2025 Capturing Kids’ Hearts® National Showcase School! 🎉🏆 This honor puts Lakewood among a select group of schools nationwide recognized for building a campus culture where students feel safe, connected, and truly cared for. Principal Jeri Jackson shared: "Before students can succeed academically, they must first feel emotionally safe and supported. Being named a Showcase School validates our belief that strong relationships are the foundation of effective teaching and learning." With strategies like greeting students at the door, creating social contracts, and nurturing trust and respect, Lakewood is showing what it means to lead in social-emotional learning and student engagement. 💙 Huge thanks to our teachers, staff, families, and students who make this community so special. We're proud to be part of a movement that proves: when you capture a child’s heart, you capture their mind. #LakewoodLeads #CapturingKidsHearts #DPSProud
