February PBIS Celebration

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, schoolwide framework designed to improve student behavior and create a safe, predictable, and positive learning environment. Instead of focusing primarily on punishment, PBIS teaches and reinforces clear behavioral expectations, much like academic skills. Schools define 3–5 core expectations, explicitly teach what those behaviors look like in different settings, consistently acknowledge students who meet them, and use data to identify trends and provide targeted support for students who need additional interventions. The framework operates in tiers—universal supports for all students, targeted small-group interventions for those at risk, and intensive individualized plans for students with greater needs—ensuring that behavior is addressed systematically and equitably. At Lakeview School, the implementation of PBIS has had a measurable impact, with discipline referrals down by more than 50% this year, reflecting stronger student engagement, clearer expectations, and a more positive school climate overall.
