Community and Family Immigration Concerns

Students had the unique opportunity to spend time with esteemed judges and officials, gaining firsthand insight into the justice system:
Judge Mitchell (District Court Judge - Family & Criminal Law)
Judge Rhinehart (Superior Court - Higher Level, Felonies, etc.)
Thank you to the judges for sharing their time and knowledge with the next generation of engaged citizens!

Durham Early College of Health Sciences Senior Recognized as National Merit Commended Student
Durham Public Schools is proud to announce that Ellis Helser, a 12th-grade student at Durham Early College of Health Sciences, has been recognized as a Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.
This recognition places Ellis among the top 34,000 students nationwide who scored exceptionally well on the PSAT/NMSQT. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, the honor highlights Ellis's outstanding academic promise and places them in the top tier of high school seniors across the country.
Ellis's achievement reflects a deep commitment to academic excellence, perseverance, and intellectual growth. As a student in the Durham Public School system, Ellis exemplifies the values we strive to instill in all of our scholars—curiosity, resilience, and a passion for learning.

Durham Early College of Health Sciences (formerly Middle College High School at Durham Tech) Earns Top Marks in State Report Card
Durham Early College of Health Sciences, formerly known as Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College, continues to make headlines for its outstanding academic performance and commitment to student success.
In the latest state report card data, the school earned a letter grade of “A”, making it one of only four schools in Durham Public Schools to receive this top distinction. This achievement reflects the hard work of students, educators, and staff in fostering a high-performing academic environment.
The school also excelled in areas tied to college and career readiness. On the ACT WorkKeys assessment, Durham Early College of Health Sciences was one of just four schools in the district to exceed the 61.4% benchmark, showcasing strong workforce preparedness. Even more impressively, the school achieved a 100% Cohort Graduation Rate, joining a select group of six high schools in the district to meet or surpass the 86.4% graduation benchmark.
These milestones contribute to a broader success story for Durham Public Schools, which now ranks among the top 10 districts in North Carolina for meeting and exceeding academic growth expectations. DPS also leads the state’s 12 largest districts in overall growth.
Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis expressed pride in the district’s continued progress:
“As the leader of instruction for this district, I am proud of the progress that we continue to make, proud of our teachers who inspire our scholars to learn, proud of our principals who in turn inspire our teachers and staff, and grateful to the parents and community who place their trust in our ability to provide an education that is preparing them for life beyond graduation,” said Dr. Lewis.
With a strong foundation in both academics and real-world readiness, Durham Early College of Health Sciences is proving to be a model of excellence within the district and across the state.

Good evening DECHS families. We hope that everyone had a wonderful, rainy, Wednesday. Tomorrow is the big day! Here are some important pieces of information to help the day go as smoothly as possible.
Tomorrow and Friday, you will be allowed to drop off in the circle, in the front of the school. Please do not try to turn left. Follow the traffic pattern attached.
In the afternoon, it is imperative that everyone follows the pickup pattern attached. You will pick your student up on the left side, in the 5 designated parallel parking spots. As one car exits, another car may pull forward. There is a brief video for you to watch, so that you can visualize what it looks like. https://youtu.be/HvjIf3JWnHE
We will issue numbers to students in the coming days. That number will need to be displayed on the front dashboard.
Unless there is an urgent matter, please do not park and come in. We have all schedules on standby, so that students can pick them up immediately upon entering the building. We know that this is an exciting day for everyone. However, we want to minimize the amount of traffic that is already entering the building.
As a reminder, there will be media, filming and taking pictures. For students that are Opting Out of having their pictures taken, they need to have the smiley face sticker displayed close to the neck lining of their shirt. These stickers were made available at the front desk during our Open House.
Thank you all for all that you do, and we look forward to seeing our students tomorrow! Have a great evening.
Respectfully,
DECHS Admin Team
