Durham Early College of Health Sciences Hosts Successful "Popsicles In The Park" for Incoming Students and Families
Durham, NC — On Tuesday, June 24th, Durham Early College of Health Sciences welcomed rising 9th graders and their families to its annual Popsicles In The Park event—a joyful gathering designed to build community and ease the transition into high school. Held in collaboration with the Duke University Healthcare Work-Based Learning team, the event drew more than 160 RSVPs, making it one of the school’s largest early engagement events to date.
Despite the summer heat, families arrived ready to connect, play, and cool down with delicious popsicles provided by local favorite Loco Pop. The evening featured a variety of activities including casual soccer games, arts and crafts stations, and plenty of opportunities for students and parents to meet teachers, staff, and fellow classmates.
Principal Joshua Brown shared his enthusiasm for the event’s success, saying, “We were really happy with the turnout. I know the heat may have kept a few families away, but those who came out had a wonderful time. It was a chance to build relationships, meet relatives of our students, and begin shaping the kind of supportive community we want here at Durham Early College. This event is all about building family—and I believe we accomplished that.”
Hosted by both Durham Early College of Health Sciences staff and members of the Duke University Healthcare Work-Based Learning team, Popsicles In The Park not only introduced families to the school’s culture but also gave them a glimpse into the valuable partnerships that will support students throughout their high school experience.
As the new academic year approaches, the school continues to prioritize strong family engagement and community connection as key pillars of student success. Events like Popsicles In The Park are just one example of how Durham Early College creates a welcoming environment where students—and their families—can thrive from day one.
