Good afternoon E.K . Powe parents and families,

We have an update on the playground construction given the recent weather that has caused flooding throughout the county. We’re happy to report that demolition work has begun, and most of the old playground structures have been broken down. As of today, the current schedule has a completion date of August 20 for this playground barring any additional weather delays. We ask for your understanding as we work around any future weather issues that may ultimately change the completion date. We’ll continue to keep you apprised of our progress. Thank you for your patience. We look forward to opening the new playground to our students.

Families supply lists for the 25-26 school year our posted on the schools web site. E.k. Powe will also host it meet the teacher night on Thursday 8.21.

🎒 Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year – Starts Today! 🚍 Durham, let’s kick off the school year right! The annual “Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year” school supply drive begins today, running through August 8. Our good friends at the DPS Foundation will be leading the effort in restocking the shelves at Crayons2Calculators so every DPS teacher has the tools needed—completely free—for student success 📝📚 What’s happening: Community-wide efforts to gather essential supplies—pencils, notebooks, art tools, rulers, folders, tissue, and more. Drop-off bins are set up around the city (libraries, churches, businesses) and at Crayons2Calculators warehouse, 808 Bacon St., open Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11 am–3 pm. Prefer to support digitally? Financial donations help purchase high-need items efficiently. Why it matters: Last year, Crayons2Calculators distributed over $129,000 in supplies, supporting 96% of DPS teachers at 59 schools—and many teachers still spend hundreds out-of-pocket. 👉 How YOU can help: Donate supplies: drop off at Crayons2Calculators or community bins. Give online: support via financial contributions. Share & volunteer: host your own drive or help pack supplies. Let’s come together and ensure no teacher—or student—goes without this school year. 🔗 Visit www.fillthebus.org for more details and a full list of needed items. #FillThatBus #DPSStrong #FuelTheYear #Crayons2Calculators

Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week: Honoring the Heart of Education
🌱🍕🍪 Food, Fun, and Learning in 3rd Grade! 🍪🍕🌱 The E.K. Powe Elementary 3rd grade team has done an incredible job bringing their IB unit – Sharing the Planet to life! Using HMH Farm to Table, students explored where food comes from, how our choices impact daily life, and how to prepare healthy meals. ✨ Highlights from this amazing unit: ✅ D.I.N.E. (Durham nonprofit) visited to teach about healthy choices, and students made veggie pizzas—some were shocked that people put veggies on pizza! 😆🍕 ✅ A field trip to Northern's Culinary Arts kitchen, where students made spaghetti and baked cookies—they couldn’t stop talking about it! 🍝🍪 ✅ Now, students are designing food trucks, using math to set menu prices, budget costs, and calculate profits. 🚚💰 ✅ After break, they’ll plant and grow vegetables to observe, measure, and eventually eat! 🌱🥕 This hands-on learning experience has been truly inspiring! 🎉👏 #WeAreDPS #EKPowe #NutritionEd
