Greetings:

As we approach the middle of November, there is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding the possible delay of SNAP benefits. A significant number of EK Powe elementary families depend on SNAP benefits to ensure they have food in their homes. Many within our community have asked how they can help–EK Powe has always been a community that wants to help their neighbors!

If you are a family who will be impacted by the delay of SNAP benefits and wish to receive information and possible support, please confidentially complete THIS FORM. Ms. Wilson will provide information about community resources and will also distribute available resources from our community as well.

If you are a family who would like to lend a helping hand, here are two possible ways to offer practical assistance to families within our community in the immediate future.

  • Direct support: donate a grocery store gift card. Preferred grocery stores: Food Lion and Walmart (this will allow us to easily combine gift cards for families). Please ensure the amount is clearly marked on the gift card for Ms. Wilson to coordinate equitable distribution.

  • Donate food to a local food pantry: there are many local food pantries in Durham. Find one HERE and donate food. We’ll provide this same resource to families in our community with needs.

We are committed to helping families within our community remain fed during this challenging time. Thank you to our generous community for making this possible!

Saludos:

Good afternoon y Buenas tardes,

As we move into the new year, I wanted to post a few helpful links for families looking to support Powe.

  1. Volunteering with the PTA generally - great way to support EK Powe!

  2. Feedback for questions/concerns related to Powe - we are regularly checking this and responding.

  3. Volunteering to help catalog books in the library and classrooms.

  4. Crayons2Calculators "shopping" dates - a great way to get needed supplies to our classrooms.

Our first "Waffles with Weldon" breakfast will occur on October 15th in the Powe cafeteria at 7:30 AM. This is a great time to share your hopes, dreams and questions with Mr. Weldon. (We aren't sure if it will DEFINITELY include waffles, but there will be some light breakfast offered).

Thank you, as always, for your support at EK Powe - Where Students Grow and Eagles SOAR!

🎒 Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year – Starts Today! 🚍 Durham, let’s kick off the school year right! The annual “Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year” school supply drive begins today, running through August 8. Our good friends at the DPS Foundation will be leading the effort in restocking the shelves at Crayons2Calculators so every DPS teacher has the tools needed—completely free—for student success 📝📚 What’s happening: Community-wide efforts to gather essential supplies—pencils, notebooks, art tools, rulers, folders, tissue, and more. Drop-off bins are set up around the city (libraries, churches, businesses) and at Crayons2Calculators warehouse, 808 Bacon St., open Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11 am–3 pm. Prefer to support digitally? Financial donations help purchase high-need items efficiently. Why it matters: Last year, Crayons2Calculators distributed over $129,000 in supplies, supporting 96% of DPS teachers at 59 schools—and many teachers still spend hundreds out-of-pocket. 👉 How YOU can help: Donate supplies: drop off at Crayons2Calculators or community bins. Give online: support via financial contributions. Share & volunteer: host your own drive or help pack supplies. Let’s come together and ensure no teacher—or student—goes without this school year. 🔗 Visit www.fillthebus.org for more details and a full list of needed items. #FillThatBus #DPSStrong #FuelTheYear #Crayons2Calculators

🌱🍕🍪 Food, Fun, and Learning in 3rd Grade! 🍪🍕🌱 The E.K. Powe Elementary 3rd grade team has done an incredible job bringing their IB unit – Sharing the Planet to life! Using HMH Farm to Table, students explored where food comes from, how our choices impact daily life, and how to prepare healthy meals. ✨ Highlights from this amazing unit: ✅ D.I.N.E. (Durham nonprofit) visited to teach about healthy choices, and students made veggie pizzas—some were shocked that people put veggies on pizza! 😆🍕 ✅ A field trip to Northern's Culinary Arts kitchen, where students made spaghetti and baked cookies—they couldn’t stop talking about it! 🍝🍪 ✅ Now, students are designing food trucks, using math to set menu prices, budget costs, and calculate profits. 🚚💰 ✅ After break, they’ll plant and grow vegetables to observe, measure, and eventually eat! 🌱🥕 This hands-on learning experience has been truly inspiring! 🎉👏 #WeAreDPS #EKPowe #NutritionEd
