About Driver Education

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel training. The classroom phase of Driver Education in DPS is virtual.

To take Driver Education with Durham Public Schools, a student must be in one of these categories:

  • Attend a Durham Public School high school

  • Attend a private school or charter school located in Durham County

  • Attend a registered home school located in Durham County

  • A student must be 14 ½ years of age on the first day of class

Students must take Driver Ed at the school where they are enrolled.  Students who register for a Driver Ed class at a school where they are not enrolled will be removed from the class list and must wait 6 months to register again.
