Durham, NC | October 15, 2025 — Congratulations to Dr. Vanessa Alford, principal of C.C. Spaulding Elementary School, who has been named the 2025–2026 Durham Public Schools Principal of the Year!
Recognized for her “relentless focus on equity and academic excellence,” Dr. Alford was surprised with the honor during a heartfelt celebration with students and staff. Under her leadership, Spaulding has become a nurturing, high-performing learning community where every child is challenged, supported, and seen.
Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis praised her transformative impact, noting that her focus on literacy and math has led to measurable gains and narrowed opportunity gaps for historically underserved students.
A veteran educator and mentor, Dr. Alford credited her success to her staff, students, and family—especially her parents, who instilled in her the belief that education is the great leveler.
“I’m humbled. It could have been anybody,” Dr. Alford said. “My colleagues noted it was my time, and they are here to support me.”
Dr. Alford’s open-door leadership, deep family and community partnerships, and unwavering belief in her scholars have made Spaulding a true hub of pride for the Durham community. She will now advance to represent Durham Public Schools in the Regional Principal of the Year competition.
