Emily Chávez (she/her) is a longtime educator professional with over 15 years of experience in the field. Over the course of her career, she has been an advocate for social justice in education and worked to create opportunities for equitable educational access, particularly for students of color, undocumented students, and LGBTQ+ students.

 A former DPS educator, she has taught middle school, high school, and undergraduate students as well as led professional development on Latin American and Caribbean Studies for teachers around the state of North Carolina. She is the co-editor, along with Dr. Kia Caldwell, of Engaging the African Diaspora in K-12 Education (Peter Lang Publishing, 2020). Most recently, she served as the DREAM Project Director at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education, where she partnered with Durham Public Schools to recruit, support, and retain teachers from underrepresented backgrounds.

Emily holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College, an M.A.T. from Duke University, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from North Carolina State University. She is currently a full-time student in the M.S.W. program at UNC-Chapel Hill and a Weiss Urban Livability Fellow. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, she has lived in Durham for over 18 years.
