Matt Sears joined the Durham County Board of Education in 2014 and has a passion for strong district and school leadership and equitable distribution of resources to meet the needs of Durham's students. He and his wife, Ellen Beckmann (a transportation planner for the City of Durham), have three young children, the oldest of which attend/have attended Lakewood Elementary School and The Whitted School.

In his day job, Matt heads up all face-to-face educational programming for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP), including curriculum development, seasonal staff recruiting, staff training, and day-to-day management of summer and academic year programs. Before joining TIP, Matt spent six years at NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning, developing teachers and school leaders in project-based learning, deploying principles and practices of critical friendship, coaching principals and district leaders on school improvement, and leading the organization’s move from face-to-face to blended professional development and distance learning. Matt holds his BS in mathematics with computer science from Purdue University and a MAT from UNC-Chapel Hill. Matt has received numerous teaching awards, including the Teacher of the Year for Durham Public Schools and a Fulbright award to teach middle school math in Tamil Nadu, India.
