Bettina Umstead believes that every child is born with immense promise and potential, yet we live in a world that does not allow for the potential and promise of every child to be fully realized due to systemic racism and other injustices. This belief led her to seek a position on the School Board to advocate for the policies and practices that will lead to the success of Durham’s students.

Bettina graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s in Middle Grades Education. She has worked in community-based organizations supporting students and families on their journey to college as well as consults with youth-serving organizations on how to advance anti-racist practices in their work. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Museum of Durham History and People’s Alliance Fund. Her work in the community has been recognized by as a recipient of the 2017 Durham Magazine Woman of Achievement Award and the 2019 First Lady Award from the Durham Chapter of Charms, Inc.
