Good afternoon RHS families,
This is Dr. Woods-Weeks calling with the weekly update. A heartfelt thank you to our amazing PTA for another fantastic FriYah event. Thank you for supporting our faculty, staff, and school community.
Shout out to the music in schools’ concert last week. Students had an exceptional performance. And hats off to our band and orchestra student for an impressive performance as well.
Also, on behalf of the Riverside PTA, congratulations to Ms. Laura Brady for being selected as the winner of a Riverside Pirat Hero Award! This award recognizes a Riverside teacher, coach, or other staff member who has gone above and beyond to support our community.
Please join me in congratulating our 2023 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Christy Simpson. Good luck to you Ms. Simpson as you advance to the next level of the competition. Congratulations!
The ACT is Tuesday, March 7, 2023. All juniors are required to take the ACT. Please be prompt and on time. Testing will begin at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Do not be late! Students are reminded to bring your calculators, laptop, and chargers. Students will not be dismissed until the end of testing. The ACT make-up will be held March 8th and 9th.

AIG INFORMATION SESSION
Students who qualify for the Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) services at Riverside High School based on your test scores and/or GPA should have received an invitation in the mail to attend an information session on Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Media Center. During the session you will have a chance to formally sign your AIG paperwork, learn more about the advanced options we offer, and your opportunities for post graduate studies. If you are unable to attend or you would like to schedule an individual meeting, please contact Mrs. Stone our AIG specialist at Rebecca_Stone@dpsnc.net
Counselors are finishing up registration sessions with our students this coming week, March 6th – 10th. If your student has not attended a session yet to select their classes for next school year, they should check both their school email and their Canvas accounts for their appointment time. Counselors are not scheduling individual appointments for registration. It is happening in small group sessions. If students do not attend the sessions to select their classes, they will be selected for them.
Spring sports are off to a fantastic start, this week's home games include Men's Lacrosse on Monday and our huge rivalry match on Wednesday against Northern. Women's Lacrosse will have their first match of the season against Jordan on Tuesday. The Men's Tennis Team will host Voyager this Thursday in their home opener. Want to catch a Baseball game? Wednesday and Friday your pirates will host Southern Durham and DSA. For detailed schedules and tickets please visit, www.dpsathletics.com/riverside.
Need volunteer/ community service hours, your athletics department has you covered. You may volunteer to run concessions or assists with game day operations. Please see the signup genius on the athletics web page.
Think you have what it takes to become the next voice of the Pirates? Contact Athletic Director Robert Duncan or the Director of Student Engagement Colin Phillips for more details.
As a reminder:
Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: Are you interested in starting college courses tuition-free while in high school during the summer and/or fall 2023 semester? If so, please sign up for a CCP Information Session via Zoom here. If none of those dates work, please sign up for one hosted via Zoom by a Durham Tech colleague here. Attending one information session is mandatory to join CCP. Parents are welcome to attend. During the Information Session, you will learn about the various pathways, admission requirements, application process, deadlines and more. Please contact Mr. Jones, our Durham Tech College Liaison at firstname.lastname@example.org or text 919-943-1696 if you have any questions. (Relevant until April 17th).
That said, please continue to help us enforce the DPS Code of Conduct by ensuring that your student adheres to the rules, policies and procedures set forth. Students show your school pride by wearing our school colors on Friday. I will see each of you at the River tomorrow. Go forth and make it a great evening! Roll Pirates Roll! Thank you.
