Good afternoon RHS families,

This is Dr. Woods-Weeks calling with the weekly update. Congratulations to our Special Olympics Champions for another tournament under their belt! Yes, Riverside continues to be the Durham County basketball AND CHEER champions. Congratulations!

Hats off to students under the tutelage of Ms. Duncan for an amazing performance this past week in the African American Heritage Dance Program. Kudos to you!

Also, congratulations to the Engineering team for yet another great Engineering Spring Speaker Day last Friday. And a special thank you to all the speakers for their presence and insightful sharing of information as well.

Fall registration for the 2023-2024 school year is under way.  All students received their registration sheets with core recommendations in their email last week.  The registration sheets contained instructions on the registration process; however, students are not expected to register independently.  Students will receive passes to attend a scheduled registration meeting with their counselor between February 21-March 10th. Students who do not attend their registration meeting will have courses selected for them.  Experienced students may choose to complete their registration independently; however, meeting with your counselor is a requirement to review course selections for next year.  Students we have a small window of opportunity to complete registration. Do your part! Own your learning.

Detailed registration information is posted on the Student Services website and Canvas.  Students were provided with links to the registration manual containing course descriptions, 2023-2024 course list, and the registration PowerPoint. All special requests such as teacher’s assistant, media assistant, independent study, early graduation, and early release/late arrival must be submitted by March 10th to be considered for next school year.

The second SEMESTER benchmark testing window (“MOY”) is March 1st–7th. Students Mark Your Calendar and plan accordingly. 95% participation and above is our goal.

Great job team! The Spring ACT WorkKeys assessment is February 21st – March 3rd. All 12th grade CTE concentrators must take the WorkKeys assessment during the testing window. Pirates, these assessments are a part of our accountability. Please mark your calendar and plan accordingly.

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: Are you interested in starting college courses tuition-free while in high school during the summer and/or fall 2023 semester? If so, please sign up for a CCP Information Session via Zoom here. If none of those dates work, please sign up for one hosted via Zoom by a Durham Tech colleague here. Attending one information session is mandatory to join CCP. Parents are welcome to attend. During the Information Session, you will learn about the various pathways, admission requirements, application process, deadlines and more. Please contact Mr. Jones, our Durham Tech College Liaison at jonest@durhamtech.edu or text 919-943-1696 if you have any questions. (Relevant until April 17th).

Lastly, the goal for DPS is to have 100% of our students’ parents or guardians having access to a Parent Portal account. Our data manager, Mr. Bryan Garcia can assist with Parent Portal account creation and password reset. The district average has surpassed 90%!!!  Let's keep pushing towards our goal of 100%! If you do not have a Parent Portal account, contact Mr. Garcia right away. We can do this!

That said, please continue to help us enforce the DPS Code of Conduct by ensuring that your student adheres to the rules, policies and procedures set forth. Students show your school pride by wearing our school colors on Friday. I will see each of you at the River tomorrow. Go forth and make it a great evening! Roll Pirates Roll! Thank you.
