Good afternoon RHS families,
This is Dr. Woods-Weeks calling with the weekly update.
Help us Celebrate National School Counseling Week 2023, School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big, 2023 will be celebrated February 6 - 10th. National School Counseling Week, highlights school counselors’ tremendous impact in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Let’s give a shout out and celebrate our school counselor’s hard work and dedication this week with special tokens of appreciation for all they do for our students.
As a reminder:
Wednesday, February 8, 2022, is an Early Release Day. School will be dismissed at 2:00 pm. Please govern yourselves accordingly.
Next, our Spring Open House/Curriculum Night will be held Thursday, February 9th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. All parents and students are encouraged to attend.
This is the Last Chance to order your yearbook. Yearbooks can be purchased online at www.jostensyearbooks.com or see Ms. Roth in room 146. They will sell out. Buy it now, installment payment plans are available. Order now to avoid disappointment later. Do not wait!
The goal for DPS is to have 100% of our students’ parents or guardians having access to a Parent Portal account. Our data manager, Mr. Bryan Garcia assist with Parent Portal account creation and password reset. The district average has surpassed 90%!!! Let's keep pushing towards our goal of 100%! If you do not have a Parent Portal account, contact Mr. Garcia right away. We can do this!
The window for ACCESS testing for all EL students in DPS opens tomorrow February 6th--March 3rd. All EL students must test.
ACT prep sessions begin Tuesday, February 7th at 9:00 a.m. All 11th grade students will receive tutoring to prepare for the ACT every Tuesday in February. Students will attend a session for one period per day on Tuesday February 7, 14, 21, and 28 to help maximize their potential on this important exam that is part of the college admissions process. The ACT will be given during school the first week of March. See Ms. Stone for more details.
DPS Advanced Academics is presenting a virtual information session on AP Classes and the College Board’s Big Future program on Wednesday February 8 from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Please see our school website for more details and to register online for the session.
The Spring ACT WorkKeys assessment is February 21st – March 3rd. All 12th grade CTE concentrators must take the WorkKeys assessment during the testing window. Pirates, these assessments are a part of our accountability. Please mark your calendar and plan accordingly.
The PTA will meet Tuesday, February 7th at 6:30pm in the Media Center.
The A/B Honor Roll Celebration will be held Friday, February 10th in the small gym during SMART Lunch. The plan calls for honor roll students to receive their certificates and a ticket to attend the event in homeroom. Students will report to the small gym at 12:15 p.m. More information to come via announcements this week.
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery registration is now open until Tuesday, February 7th at 11:55 p.m. Credit by Demonstrated Mastery is a two-phase process by which students can earn credit for a course by demonstrating a deep understanding and mastery of application of content standards prior to taking the course. Students who successfully complete CDM receive a pass/fail grade and course credit. All DPS high school students are eligible to request an opportunity to earn credit through CDM.

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: Are you interested in starting college courses tuition-free while in high school during the summer and/or fall 2023 semester? If so, please sign up for a CCP Information Session via Zoom here. If none of those dates work, please sign up for one hosted via Zoom by a Durham Tech colleague here. Attending one information session is mandatory to join CCP. Parents are welcome to attend. During the Information Session, you will learn about the various pathways, admission requirements, application process, deadlines and more. SPIRIT WEEK
Winter Spirit Week is here!!! The annual 3 vs 3 basketball tournament will be held in the gym during SMART Lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and is free for all. Monday is Grout fit day wear Gray! Tuesday is Pirate Day, show off your Pirate Pride, Wednesday is Meme Day, Thursday is Throwback Thursday, and Friday is Jersey Day. Tag the Athletics Department in your Pirate pride for a chance to get free T-Shirts.
ATHLETICS UPDATES
A huge shout out to Vivian Brennan who was named Diver of the year and Elodie Mitchelle who was named Swimmer of the year! Way to go swim team! Your Pirates Wrestling team will travel to complete the regional individual championships this weekend, wish them luck! Pirate Basketball senior night will be Tuesday 2/7 at Home. JV boys at 5:00 pm, Girls at 6:30 pm, and Varsity Boys at 8:00 pm. The pirates will face off against Southern Alamance. The Indoor Track Team will also compete in the Indoor 4a state championships this weekend at JDL this weekend.
SPRING SPORTS INFO
Spring sports parent meeting will be held on 2/15/23 at 7:30 pm via Zoom. The link will be shared in next week’s update. The booster club is looking for new board members. if you are interested, please contact Athletic Director robert_duncan@dpsnc.net for more info.
Interested in Golf, Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Women's Soccer, Men's Tennis or Track and Field? Springs sports officially start February 13th All athletes must have a ticket to play to try out. Ticket-to-play dates for spring sports will be 2/8, 2/13, and 2/14 in the front lobby for the first 30 mins of smart lunch. contact Athletic Trainer Erin_Samuels@dpsnc.net for any physical or registration questions.
All potential athletes must complete or renew an online registration 1 time per school year at www.dpsathletics.com/riverside
Athletes must have a sports physical on file at Riverside dated after 2/14/ 2022 to participate in any spring sports. All physicals can be forwarded to Athletic Trainer Erin_Samuels@dpsnc.net.
