DPS Response to Theatre Concerns
We would like to share with you the exciting facilities and opportunities ahead for the theatre arts program at Northern High School.
DPS has designed the new Northern High campus, including its theatre arts spaces, in full compliance with the state Department of Public Instruction’s 2019standards for grades 9-12. This will be a state-of-the-art facility designed to allow all of our academic programs, including theatre arts, to work in harmony with each other to uplift and enrich the entire school community.
Building designers and DPS staff have revised building plans to support the theatre arts program in excess of DPI’s 2019 guidelines, including multiple rounds of revisions to the set prep area that could have supported black box space and the provision of an additional classroom, all at the behest of the theatre teacher. One of the redesigns included adding two sinks and a chase for future washer/dryer hookups to the set prep classroom, neither of which are included in DPI’s guidelines. Additional storage and an office have also been added to the theatre arts area. All of these changes were made late in the design process. The location of all of Northern High’s theatre arts spaces is also in line with DPI adjacency guidelines.
Northern High’s new facilities will benefit the entire school community. Mr. Truitt and his students have built a lasting legacy of outstanding performance and learning in the Northern High theatre program, and we cannot wait to see the heights that they rise to in this new space.
