DPS teachers to see significant local supplement increase next year
Following the adoption of the Durham County budget for 2022-23 by the Board of Commissioners, Durham Public Schools Superintendent Pascal Mubenga announced that the district would be able to implement a significant increase in teacher salary supplements for the coming school year.
The proposed local supplement increases, to be presented to the Durham Public Schools Board of Education at its June 23 meeting, will provide most teachers and certified staff with a year-over-year increase of $930 for the 2022-23 school year from the last year. Teachers and certified staff receive a base salary that is set by the state of North Carolina; school districts such as DPS offer salary supplements from local funds to address the cost of living and compete with other school districts.
“We will continue to retain and recruit the best teachers in North Carolina, and I’m grateful that our Board of Commissioners and County Manager have given us the resources that will enable us to provide an incredibly competitive salary,” said Dr. Mubenga. “At a time of a statewide and national shortage of teachers, our Durham community is stepping up and saying, ‘We value you and want you to stay here for our students.’”
The new salary supplements would start at $6,450 for new teachers and rise to $11,100 for teachers with 31 or more years of experience, at an estimated cost of $4 million to the district.
In addition, every full-time employee in Durham Public Schools will receive a COVID-relief-funded retention bonus, $1500 before taxes, this October. (The bonus will be prorated for part-time employees). DPS has budgeted for a 2.5 percent salary increase for all DPS employees next year, based on the expected state budget. The district will also undertake an update to its classified salary study next year to identify opportunities to correct imbalances and increase market competitiveness in non-teaching salaries, in support of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education’s vow to provide a true living wage for all employees.
