JHS ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR OF BANDS

Please welcome Mr. Cameron Garris, JHS Director of Bands! Mr. Garris graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a bachelor’s degree in music education. At UNCG, he performed with the nationally recognized Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra and was also involved in the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. He previously served as a brass instructor for the award-winning Smithfield-Selma High School marching band in Smithfield, NC. He is also an avid performer and has studied trombone with Dr. Randy Kohlenberg (UNCG) and Terry Mizesko (NC Symphony). He is an active member of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, and also holds professional affiliations with the North Carolina Bandmasters Association and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Mr. Garris served as Director of Bands at Person High School from 2019 to 2022. During his tenure at Person, the program consistently continued to perform across the community and state, while navigating the challenges of hybrid learning and a long-awaited return to in-person learning. He re-established the jazz ensemble, which had not been a performing unit at the school for many years. In the past year, the band has also worked with notable clinicians like Col. Jason Fettig (Director of the United States Marine Band), and Mr. Joshua Cvijanovic (Central District Band Director of the Year), among others. His students have been regularly named to honor bands across the state. Most recently, the Person High School Concert Band received a superior rating at Central District Bandmasters Association Music Performance Adjudication during the spring 2022 semester.
