JHS Names Joseph Sharrow As New Athletic Director

Joe Sharrow Named Athletic Director at Jordan High School

Mr. Sharrow will be joining the Jordan High School family after most recently serving as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Vance County High School in Henderson, North Carolina. He served the Vance County Schools community for ten years.

He is a native of Traverse City, Michigan, where he attended Traverse City West Senior High School and played football and baseball. He played football for the Titans under Hall of Fame Coach Matt Prisk. After high school, Sharrow earned his secondary teaching licensure in Social Studies and the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science – Community Relations and a Minor in History from Michigan State University in East Lansing. He later earned his administrative licensure and the degree of Master of Arts in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Supervision from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.

Sharrow began his educational career as a Social Studies Teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, where he taught at Canter Middle School in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago’s south side. At this time, he also earned a Graduate Certification in Teaching and Curriculum from Michigan State University. In 2012, he relocated to North Carolina and taught Social Studies at Southern Vance High School in Henderson. He taught various sections of World History, Civics and Economics, United States History, and AP United States History. He was also an Assistant Coach in Varsity Football and Varsity Baseball and the Head Junior Varsity Football Coach for the Raiders.

In 2014, he was named the Athletic Director at Southern Vance High School, a post he held until the school was consolidated with Northern Vance High School in 2018 to form Vance County High School. Sharrow was named Vance County High School’s first Athletic Director and oversaw the athletic department’s massive consolidation project. He was recognized for his efforts by Vance County Schools with the district’s “Vanceformation Award”, which recognizes outstanding employees who have gone above and beyond their normal duties to rethink, reform, reimagine, and renew the educational process in their schools.

Mr. Sharrow has also been recognized as a Certified Interscholastic Coach by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and a Certified Athletic Administrator by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). He is an active member of the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association and plans to complete the NIAAA’s Certified Master Athletic Administrator certification this summer.

He lives in Durham with his wife, Samantha, who is an elementary special education teacher in the Wake County Public School System. They have a Labrador Retriever named Barry and a cat named Ernie. They love the outdoors, traveling, and cheering for Michigan State Spartan football and basketball.

Mr. Sharrow expresses sincere gratitude to Principal Susan Taylor and the Jordan High School community for the opportunity to serve the student-athletes and coaches of Jordan High School.  He is most excited to collaborate with stakeholders and community partners to continue growing the Jordan High School athletic programs and hopes to represent the Falcons with class and professionalism.
