Dr. Victoria Creamer Named 2021-22 DPS Principal of the Year
The Durham Public Schools Principal of the Year for 2021-22, Dr. Victoria Creamer, is not just a champion, she’s a champion-builder. She faces challenges on behalf of her students so that their paths toward success can be made easier. The career educator began her career in North Carolina as a middle school teacher, then earned her way into school leadership as an assistant principal before taking the reins at Creekside Elementary School after serving in an interim role.
Not only did she encounter and manage growth challenges at the district’s largest elementary school, but when COVID closed the school doors, she didn’t hesitate to rally her staff into community service. They reached out to apartment complexes—particularly those of families needing additional resources—to offer student-centered events and technology assistance to parents. Dr. Creamer’s commitment to technology and digital literacy is unwavering. In a previous position as principal in another district, she established a 1:1 digital learning environment. Her work at Creekside is in alignment with her belief in digital access and literacy for all students.
According to Dr. Darlene Ryan, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, Dr. Creamer’s strength is vision, and she is diligent about ensuring success for her students. She’s also committed to growth for all, including staff. “She looks at issues and problems and all that will best support the community,” said Dr. Ryan. “She’s incredibly passionate and here to build a community culture vested in equity and meeting the needs of every child.”
It’s not an easy feat for any educator, but Dr. Creamer is at ease with addressing challenges head-on if it will mean removing barriers to learning and education.
Assistant Principal Lindsay Boykin can attest: “During the past two years, during extremely difficult times, Dr. Creamer brought together our community by modeling flexibility, transparency, and grace. In her bones, she believes that public school should work for all children, and she is relentless in her advocacy toward that at state and local levels.”
Dr. Creamer moves on to the North Central Region competition for state Principal of the Year. She will be recognized at the next regular Durham Public Schools Board of Education meeting on Thursday, November 18.
