During an emergency called board meeting on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, the Durham Public Schools Board of Education approved the purchase and replacement of the Durham School of the Arts water-cooled HVAC chiller system.
District staff has worked with Comfort Mechanical Contractors, Inc. in order to secure the removal of the existing chiller and installation of a replacement water-cooled chiller. This is going to cost the district $326,140.00 and it is expected to take three weeks to replace.
On Friday, April 9, 2021, the district was made aware the two chillers serving the main and science buildings on DSA’s campus were no longer operable or repairable. In order to maintain learning and workplace environmental standards put in place to stop the transmission of COVID-19, the campus needs the ability to provide proper ventilation and air filtration in the buildings to support the health and safety of students and staff. Because this was no longer possible in the buildings served by the chillers, students and staff returned to remote learning while the system is being replaced.
As this project moves forward, students, staff, and families will be updated as to when the school will be able to reopen, and in-person learning can resume.
