Congratulations Dr. Lanier!

Good morning Githens families.  This is Dr. Lanier with important news.

It is with a mix of emotions that I share with you that I am departing from my role as Principal of Githens Middle School to embark on a new journey as Chief Equity and Student Achievement Officer for Orange County Schools.  My last day in Durham Public Schools is June 30.

Over the past four years, I have witnessed the incredible dedication, resilience, and spirit of our scholars, families, and staff.  Your support and commitment to the success of our scholars have truly made a lasting impact on the success we have been able to accomplish, together.  For that, I am deeply grateful.

As I transition to my new role, I leave Githens Middle School in the capable hands of our exceptional staff and leadership team.  DPS’s Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools, Dr. Kecia Rogers, will lead a search for the next principal.  Information will be shared in the coming days regarding engagement meetings with staff, the School Improvement Team, and parents to gather feedback on the selection process.  Dr. Rogers will hold a parent meeting on Monday, May 20, at 6:30pm, in the school’s media center to share the principal search timeline and next steps.  Additionally, members of our school community may share input about Githens and qualities you want to see in the next Principal of Githens via a feedback survey.  The feedback survey will be available on the homepage of our school’s website beginning Friday, May 10 through Monday, May 20.

Thank you again for your support and for allowing me the opportunity to lead this outstanding school community.  I look forward to a strong finish to this school year, together.

Make it a great day.
