Principal's Updates 9/8

Good evening Githens Raiders!  This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week!  Please listen carefully to all details.

As previously mentioned, lunch for students this year will be $3.75 and parents MUST set up a lunch account for their scholars.  Parents are able to use the link included in the email that accompanies this phone message to set up an account and add funds in their scholar's account.  When you get on the DPS Online School Payments website, click on the cart icon to create an online account.  Starting tomorrow, scholars will begin accruing a negative balance in their lunch accounts that are tied to their lunch number.  Students who receive free or reduced lunch will now eat for free.  Breakfast for all scholars is also free.

Fall sports tryouts are coming to a close.  Cheerleading will have its final day of tryouts tomorrow, September 6, and tennis will begin tryouts tomorrow through Thursday, September 8.  Any questions regarding athletics should be directed to either Ms. Stackhouse, Athletic Director, or the coaches directly.  A list of coaches and where scholars should report after school is included in the email that accompanies this phone message.

More than 2,400 students have requested transportation service since the August 8 deadline for registration. DPS is making every effort to assign all students that have requested transportation service.  As DPS adds these students to the existing DPS Transportation Service Plan, it may create changes in bus numbers or stop times for currently routed students.  Transportation is asking that parents utilize DPS Transportation Resources that provide live, up to date information through the DPS Transportation Portal.   To find your scholars’ bus assignment, route, and pickup/drop off information, please visit the Secure Bus Stop Information Service on the DPS transportation website.  All the information about how to download the app and sign up for a free account can be found by using the link that is provided in the email that accompanies this phone message.  If you are requesting that your scholar be dropped off at a different address other than what appears in PowerSchool, you must fill out a Bus Stop Appeal form.  Once the form has been turned in to our main office, we will submit the form on your behalf.  Please note, submission of appeals does not equate to automatic approval.  All transportation links are included in the email that accompanies this phone message.

The deadline for scholars to request an elective change is Wednesday, September 7.  Drop/add forms will be available in the counseling office.  Scholars can request the change by completing the form with a parent signature, or by submitting an email request by a parent or guardian.  Requests will be honored if/when availability allows the change in schedule.

In an effort to ensure parents are not blocking traffic on Old Chapel Hill Road, Githens will adhere to dismissal procedures in the afternoon.  From 3:20 to 3:25, all families picking up 6th grade scholars should come through the carpool lane in the front of the building.  8th grade scholars will now be dismissed at 3:25.  All families picking up 7th grade scholars should come to the bus parking lot beginning at 3:40 until 3:55.  The bus parking lot is located off of Southwest Durham Drive.  7th grade parents, you will not be able to come to the bus lot early.  We will not allow parents in the bus lot until all the buses are dismissed.  If you are picking up scholars in multiple grade levels, please come to the front carpool lane.  Walkers are dismissed at 3:20.

Everyone have a fantastic week!
