Principal Update 8/28

Good evening Githens Raiders!  This is Dr. Lanier, on the eve of our first day of school, with reminders  to make sure you have all the information you need to have your scholar ready for tomorrow!  Please listen carefully to all details.

Grade level School Professional Counselors will be at the top of each hall to hand out schedules to all scholars that did not attend Pride Camp or Open House.  All Githens staff will be wearing Githens t-shirts so scholars will know who they can approach if they have questions tomorrow.

The following is the Fall Sports tryouts information:

Boys Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball

  • August 31 – September 2

  • 3:45pm – 5:45pm

  • September 6 – 8

  • 3:45pm – 5:45pm

  • August 31 – September 2 and September 6

  • 3:45pm – 5:45pm

Any questions regarding athletics should be directed to either Ms. Stackhouse, Athletic Director, or the coaches directly.  A list of coaches and where scholars should report after school is included in the email that accompanies this phone message.

If you have any questions about bus transportation for your scholar, please visit the DPS transportation website. Updates have been made since Friday to include bus 48 with stops at COlonial and Valley Terrace   To find your scholars’ bus assignment, route, and pickup/drop off information, please visit the Secure Bus Stop Information Service on the DPS transportation website.  All the information about how to download the app and sign up for a free account can be found by using the link that is provided in the email that accompanies this phone message.  If you are requesting that your scholar be dropped off at a different address other than what appears in PowerSchool, you must fill out a Bus Stop Appeal form.  Once the form has been turned in to our main office, we will submit the form on your behalf.  Please note, submission of appeals does not equate to automatic approval.  All transportation links are included in the email that accompanies this phone message.

Scholars can request an elective change from August 31 through September.  Drop/add forms will be available in the counseling office.  Scholars can request the change by completing the form with a parent signature, or by submitting an email request by a parent or guardian.  Requests will be honored if/when availability allows the change in schedule.

Attention carpool riders: Parents are allowed to drop off scholars by carpool at 8:10 to coincide when students may begin entering the building.  You may not drop off students prior to this time.  Parents may begin lining up in the carpool lane at 3:00 for dismissal.  Parents lining up prior to 3:00 will be asked to leave.  In an effort to ensure parents are not blocking traffic on Old Chapel Hill Road, Githens will adhere to dismissal procedures in the afternoon.  From 3:20 to 3:35, all families picking up 6th and 8th grade scholars should come through the carpool lane in the front of the building.  All families picking up 7th grade scholars should come to the bus parking lot beginning at 3:40 until 3:55.  The bus parking lot is located off of Southwest Durham Drive.  7th grade parents, you will not be able to come to the bus lot early.  We will not allow parents in the bus lot until all the buses are dismissed.  If you are picking up scholars in multiple grade levels, please come to the front carpool lane.  Any students that will be walking home must provide written consent to their grade level administrator.  Walkers will be dismissed at 3:20.

As previously mentioned, lunch for students this year will be $3.75.  Parents are able to use the link included in the email that accompanies this phone message to set up an account and add funds in their scholar's account.  When you get on the DPS Online School Payments website, click on the cart icon to create an online account.  Students who receive free or reduced lunch will now eat for free.  Breakfast for all scholars is also free.  Scholars will also be assigned a lunch number that is tied to their lunch account.  A spreadsheet with all lunch numbers has been shared with teachers.  All scholars will receive their lunch numbers in their Core One classes on the first day of school.

Make sure your scholars get plenty of sleep tonight!  The Githens Team looks forward to making this the best year ever!
