Principal Update 8/22

Good afternoon Githens Raiders!  This is Dr. Lanier with important information regarding PTA leadership, parent resources, and reminders about 7th and 8th grade open house.  This is part one of two phone messages you will receive today.  Part two will discuss fall sports tryouts and will be released at 7:00 this evening.  Please listen carefully to all details!

A reminder that 7th and 8th grade Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 25, from 3:00 to 6:00.   A separate phone message will be sent out on Monday evening with all details regarding this event.

Please click on the link that is included in the email that accompanies this phone message to access a folder entitled “Parent Resources.”  Within this folder, you will find information on the following:

All documents have been sent to the Multicultural Resource Center for translation.  We will update families when we have received the translated documents and have placed them in the folder.  Please note, all scholars will receive their laptop devices during the first week of school.

School professional counselors will not make any elective changes until the 3rd day of school.

A reminder that breakfast will continue to be free for all scholars this year.  However, school lunch prices have increased just a bit. Full-price lunch for students is now $3.75 and reduced-price lunch is $0.40. You can apply for free or reduced lunch using the link provided in the email that accompanies this phone message.  

Throughout this week, DPS transportation will be updating their database to ensure all bus information is as accurate as possible.  Log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal account to make sure you have signed up for morning and afternoon bus transportation.  If you have any questions about bus transportation for your scholar, please visit the DPS transportation website.  To find your scholars’ bus assignment, route, and pickup/drop off information, please visit the Secure Bus Stop Information Service on the DPS transportation website. 

PowerSchool Parent Portal is the official source of student grade information and a convenient way for you to update your most current contact information.  DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Use the link provided in the email to navigate the setup process.  We are encouraging all parents to sign up as this tool will assist you in knowing what assignments your scholars need to complete as you navigate the school year, as well as, view Progress Reports and Report Cards.

The following is the Fall Sports tryouts information:

Boys Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball

  • August 31 – September 2

  • 3:45pm – 5:45pm

Tennis

  • September 6 – 8

  • 3:45pm – 5:45pm

Cheerleading

  • August 31 – September 2 and September 6

  • 3:45pm – 5:45pm 

Scholars will meet at the following locations once dismissal is complete:

Boys Soccer – Mr. McElroy (7th grade hall; B3) – Head Coach McElroy

Football – Dr. Murrill (7th grade hall; B5) – Head Coach Dr. Murrill

Cheerleading – Mr. Phillips (8th grade hall; A8) – Head Coach Ms. Huger

Volleyball – Mrs. Stackhouse (8th grade hall; A7) – Head Coach Ms. McMillan

Tennis – Mrs. Stackhouse (8th grade hall; A7) – Head Coach Mrs. Shinn

Cross Country – Mr. Fields (8th grade hall; A4) – Head Coaches Mr. Fields & Mrs. Melvin

Any questions regarding athletics should be directed to either Ms. Stackhouse, Athletic Director, or the coaches directly.
