Principal Update 8/1

Good evening Githens Raiders!  This is Dr. Lanier with important information about our website, Twitter, football conditioning, and reminders regarding transportation, breakfast/lunch, and athletics!  Please listen carefully to all details!

Our website has been updated!  Go to our main website and scroll down to “Githens Quick Links.”  Click on “Welcome Scholars & Families” for the latest updates, important links, and policies in preparation for the first day of school!

Githens is officially on Twitter!  In addition to phone messages and emails, we will also tweet information and updates!  You may follow us using the Twitter handle @gms_raiders.

6th Grade parents are asked to confirm their scholar’s participation in Pride Camp no later than Thursday, August 11. 

Our football coaches will begin to build our 2022 football program with summer conditioning in preparation for our most successful season ever.  Coaches and potential players will work from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on the Githens football field.  Scholar-athletes must have transportation to and from Githens, plenty of water to stay hydrated, proper shoes for both grass and track surfaces, and all completed paperwork including a current sports physical. The 8-day schedule for the conditioning period is as follows: 

August 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Tryouts are as follows: 

August 22, 23, 24 - 5:00 to 7:00

The first day of official practice is Monday, August 29, from 3:45 - 5:45.  If you have additional or concerns, please contact either Shlisa Stackhouse, Athletic Director, or the coaches: Dr. Charles Murrill, Jeffrey Head, Dr. Timothy Carter, and Michael Collins. 

A reminder that breakfast will continue to be free for all scholars this year.  However, school lunch prices have increased just a bit. Full-price lunch for students is now $3.75 and reduced-price lunch is $0.40. You can apply for free or reduced lunch using the link provided in the email that accompanies this phone message.  

If you are still in need of bus transportation for the upcoming school year, please use PowerSchool Parent Portal and click “yes” for morning and afternoon transportation.  Durham Public Schools is asking all parents to complete this task by August 8 to guarantee bus transportation on the first day of school.  PowerSchool Parent Portal is the official source of student grade information and a convenient way for you to update your most current contact information.  DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Use the link ( provided in the email to navigate the set up process.  We are encouraging all parents to sign up as this tool will assist you in knowing what assignments your scholars need to complete as you navigate the school year, as well as, view Progress Reports and Report Cards.    

A reminder that Ms. Shlisa Stackhouse, Athletic Director, will host an Athletic Parent Information Session via Zoom on Tuesday, August 2 at 6:00pm.  Parents who attended last Thursday will not need to attend the Tuesday session.  During the Zoom session, parents will learn about athletic requirements, “ticket-to-play” dates, and tryout dates.  The link to the Zoom is included in the email that accompanies this phone message.
