Principal's Update 5/2
Good afternoon Githens families! This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week! Please listen carefully to all details!
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week! Please join me in thanking all of our wonderful educational leaders at Githens who work tirelessly to ensure your scholar receives a high quality education every day! Parents, let’s show our teachers how much we value them this week!
All 6th grade scholars are invited to participate in the GMS EOG Math Madness Program which starts this Saturday, March 7th. The program will offer an accelerated review and enrichment opportunity covering 6th grade level math content, as well as, EOG test taking strategies. The program will be held at Githens Middle School from 9am-12pm on Saturday, March 7, Saturday, March 14, and Saturday, March 21. For more information, reach out to your scholar’s math teacher, Mr. Carter, 6th Grade Assistant Principal, or find the flyer on the GMS school website.
Githens will offer non-proficient students extra instruction and an additional testing opportunity through our Take Two summer program. Githens teachers will provide Take Two students with targeted interventions and instruction so that they can achieve proficiency. The dates for Take Two will be June 15th - June 24th. Students will be in school from 8:45 to 12:45 and breakfast and lunch will be provided. In addition, students who attend Take Two will be eligible for transportation. We are being held to strict standards for promotion to the next grade level. 6th and 7th grade students must pass math, ELA and one other course to be promoted. They must also be proficient on the state mandated End of Grade assessments in math and ELA. 8th grade students must pass ALL core classes (math, ELA, science, and social studies) and the state mandated End of Grade assessments in math, ELA, and science in order to be promoted to high school. It is also important to note that we use End of Grade testing data to place students in the appropriate classes each year. Students who do not meet the district guidelines for course placement will not be placed in honors level classes. Scholars who are successful on the End of Grade assessments that occur at the end of this school year will not need to attend Take Two and will be removed from the Take Two list. If you have received a letter from Githens regarding Take Two and Summer Learning, please monitor your scholar’s progress carefully and preliminarily
The Returning Student Form (now known as the “Back to School Form”) is mandatory for all families who will be attending Githens in the fall. As of this evening, our completion numbers are quite low. In an effort to increase participation, we are entering phase three of our campaign. All scholars have received this information in their Core 1 classes to bring home, staff members handed out information in carpool lines, and now, Core 1 teachers will call their homeroom rosters by the end of the week to remind parents that completing this information is mandatory. Additionally, the building is open to parents from 7:30 to 2:00 and from 3:00 to 4:00 to provide one-on-one assistance to those that need it.
Key components of the form, most of which are required by board policy or state/federal law, include:
Student Handbook Verification
Address and phone number updates
Transportation information (** All students will default to "NO” transportation; the updated information requesting transportation (Yes/No) must be collected fresh this year.)
District policies – technology use of laptops, personal devices, directory information, etc.
Please understand, if you do not complete this information and your scholar relies on bus transportation, they will not be guaranteed transportation in August and we at the school level will be unable to assist you. As Githens' partners with our families on the Back-to-School form, the goal for us to reach 100% of students with updated information by May 13, 2022. Part of this process is ensuring that all families have a PowerSchool Parent Portal Account. PowerSchool Parent Portal is the official source of student grade information and a convenient way for you to update your most current contact information. DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Use the link (https://www.dpsnc.net/Page/383) provided in the email that accompanies this voice message to navigate the setup process.
