Principal's Updates 4/24

Good evening Githens families!  This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week.  You will hear from me again tomorrow evening with important information regarding Take Two, state requirements for promotion, class placement, and Summer Learning.   Please listen carefully to tonight’s message!

The teacher workday, originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, has been moved to Monday, May 2.  There is no school for scholars.

Parents who wish to sign their scholars out during the school day are required to enter the building and show ID to ensure you are in PowerSchool and authorized to have contact and/or transport your scholar.  Students will not be allowed to leave the building after 2:00 as dismissal is at 2:20.  Additionally, students are required to be in classrooms, seated, with materials ready, and cell phones powered off at 7:30.  Students entering the building after 7:30 will be marked tardy.  We still have a lot of students coming to school after 7:30 missing valuable instruction.  Scholars must be on time for school and carpool starts at 7:00.  If we can’t reduce the amount of students coming late, parents will be required to park, enter the building, and sign your scholar in every morning. 

The Returning Student Form (now known as the “Back to School Form”) is mandatory for all families who will be attending Githens in the fall.  As of this evening, our completion numbers are quite low.  In an effort to increase participation, we are entering phase two of our campaign.  All scholars will receive information on PowerSchool Parent Portal and step-by-step directions on how to update all information required by DPS to complete.  

Key components of the form, most of which are required by board policy or state/federal law, include: 

  • Student Handbook Verification

  • Address and phone number updates

  • Transportation information (** All students will default to "NO” transportation; the updated information requesting transportation (Yes/No) must be collected fresh this year.)

  • Military information

  • District policies – technology use of laptops, personal devices, directory information, etc.

In an effort to assist you with this process, parents can come to the building between the hours of 7:30 and 2:00 and from 3:00 to 4:00 to receive one-on-one assistance.  Please understand, if you do not complete this information and your scholar relies on bus transportation, they will not be guaranteed transportation in August and we at the school level will be unable to assist you.  As Githens' partners with our families on the Back-to-School form, the goal for us to reach 100% of students with updated information by May 13, 2022.  This is a district expectation and failure on this goal is not optional.  Again, part of this process is ensuring that all families have a PowerSchool Parent Portal Account.  PowerSchool Parent Portal is the official source of student grade information and a convenient way for you to update your most current contact information.  DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Use the link (https://www.dpsnc.net/Page/383) provided in the email that accompanies this voice message to navigate the setup process. 

A reminder for all 8th grade families that the promotion ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 9th in the Githens Middle School gymnasium.  The following is a breakdown of the ceremony times by team:

  • 8:00am - 9:00am - Mountaineers 

  • 9:45am - 10:45am - Rams

  • 11:30am - 12:30pm - Seahawks

As stated previously, all 8th grade related questions, particularly questions regarding the 8th grade promotion ceremony, should be directed to Ms. Major, 8th Grade Assistant Principal.  

The following is a breakdown of games, days, and start times for the week:

  • Tuesday, April 26 - Baseball and Girls Soccer will compete against Brogden Middle School; 4:00

  • Wednesday, April 27 - Baseball, Softball, and Girls Soccer will travel and compete against Rogers-Herr; 4:00

  • Thursday/Friday, April 28-29 - Southern High School will host the Middle School Track and Field Tournament

A reminder that masks and social distancing is highly recommended but, not required.  All sports ticket sales are virtual through “ticket spicket” and are required for entry.  Please use the link provided in the email that accompanies this phone message to follow the steps necessary to purchase tickets.  For further information regarding athletics or specific teams, please email either Ms. Stackhouse, Athletic Director, or the coaches.
