Principal's Message 4/10

Good afternoon Githens families!  This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week!  This is part one of two messages that you will receive this afternoon.  Part two, which will provide updates on COVID protocols, will come at 6:00.  Please listen carefully to all details!

Friday, April 15 is a holiday.  The teacher workday, originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, has been moved to Monday, May 2.  On each of these days, there is no school for scholars.  Updated calendars will be available on the DPS main website tomorrow.

District mandated Case 21 EOY testing will take place between April 21 through April 29.  Specifics will be revealed closer to the first testing date.  State/district mandated EOG testing will take place between May 27 through June 10.  Remember, per the state, in order for your scholar to be promoted to the next grade, they must pass the math and ELA EOG and the math and ELA class.  For 8th grade scholars, they must also pass the science EOG and science class as well.  Refer to your scholar’s report card for their most recent semester and quarter grades.  Any questions, concerns, or clarity regarding your scholar’s academic progress should be directed to your scholar’s team teachers for a conference.

Attention 8th grade families.  The promotion ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 9th in the Githens Middle School gymnasium.  The following is a breakdown of the ceremony times by team:

  • 8:00am - 9:00am - Mountaineers

  • 9:45am - 10:45am - Rams

  • 11:30am - 12:30pm - Seahawks

There will be a meeting held on Wednesday, April 13, at 6:00, for 8th grade families regarding the logistics of the ceremony, requirements of scholars, ticket distribution, and student behavioral expectations.  This meeting is only for 8th grade families.  The link for the meeting is included in the email that accompanies this phone message.  All 8th grade related questions, particularly questions regarding the 8th grade promotion ceremony, should be directed to Ms. Major, 8th Grade Assistant Principal.

The following is a breakdown of games, days, and start times for the week:

  • Tuesday, April 12 - Baseball, Softball, and Girls Soccer will compete against Lakewood Montessori Middle School; 4:00

  • Wednesday, April 13 - Boys and Girls Track and Field will travel and compete against Lowe’s Grove Middle School; 4:00

  • Thursday, April 14 - Baseball, Softball, and Girls Soccer will travel and compete against Shepard Middle School; 4:00

A reminder that masks and social distancing is required and will be enforced.  All sports ticket sales will be virtual this year through “ticket spicket” and are required for entry.  Please use the link provided in the email that accompanies this phone message to follow the steps necessary to purchase tickets.  For further information regarding athletics or specific teams, please email either Ms. Stackhouse, Athletic Director, or the coaches.

This year, families will be able to get a head start on Back to School.  DPS will launch the “Best.Year.Ever.” Back-to-School campaign this April to generate excitement about the coming school year.  Githens will host an in-person event on Tuesday, April 19.  Please note the date change.  In response to feedback from Principals, there were some changes to the Returning Student Form (now known as the “Back to School Form”) including the timeline, shortened form, and more user-friendly language.

Key components of the form, most of which are required by board policy or state/federal law, include:

  • Student Handbook Verification

  • Address and phone number updates

  • Transportation information (** All students will default to "NO” transportation; the updated information requesting transportation (Yes/No) must be collected fresh this year.)

  • Military information

  • District policies – technology use of laptops, personal devices, directory information, etc.

Please understand, if you do not complete this information and your scholar relies on bus transportation, they will not be guaranteed transportation in August and we at the school level will be unable to assist you.  As Githens' partners with our families on the Back-to-School form, the goal for us to reach 100% of students with updated information by May 13, 2022.  Part of this process is ensuring that all families have a PowerSchool Parent Portal Account.  PowerSchool Parent Portal is the official source of student grade information and a convenient way for you to update your most current contact information.  DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Use the link (https://www.dpsnc.net/Page/383) provided in the email that accompanies this voice message to navigate the setup process.

A reminder that students are required to be in classrooms, seated, with materials ready, and cell phones powered off at 7:30.  Students entering the building after 7:30 will be marked tardy.  We still have a lot of students coming to school after 7:30 missing valuable instruction.  Scholars must be on time for school.

This concludes part one of our weekly message.  You will hear from me again at 6:00.

Good evening Githens families!  This is Dr. Lanier again for part two of our weekly message regarding updates to our district COVID protocols.  Please listen carefully to all details!

The following is a list of updates regarding masking for scholars:

  • A child who has tested positive for COVID-19 should be kept at home and must follow the health department’s guidance on isolation requirements.

  • Face coverings are no longer required, but strongly recommended on all DPS campuses and all DPS transportation.

  • Face coverings are recommended in indoor settings for people at high risk for severe disease and who are not up to date on vaccines.

  • Decisions to wear or not wear face coverings are up to individual scholars and families and must be respected.  Teachers or staff cannot require face coverings independently in a classroom, bus, or activity setting.

  • Parents must notify the Principal AND grade level Assistant Principal immediately of a positive diagnosis.  Please include the following information in your email: the last day present on campus and if they were on campus the entire day, the date symptoms began, the date tested, the date test results confirmed a positive case, bus route information, and the first and last name of any siblings that attend any DPS school and the name of the school.

  • Face coverings will be required for symptomatic students until they are picked up by their parent/guardian.

  • Face coverings are required upon return following a COVID infection for 5 days and recommended after a COVID exposure.

  • Scholars unwilling to wear a face covering upon return following a COVID infection will be required to isolate for a full 10 days before returning to school.

  • Scholars participating in Athletics and Extracurricular Arts activities for spring must continue to be vaccinated or tested weekly.  Extracurricular activities are defined as activities that occur outside of the regular school day. For example: school musicals, district events, and community performances.

  • Face coverings for athletes and scholars involved in extracurricular arts activities are NOT required while in competition or performances.

  • Athletes & artists are recommended to wear face coverings when not actively competing or performing.

  • Spectators for all extracurricular, including athletic events, are recommended to wear a face covering indoors and outdoors.

Please refer to the DPS main website for further detailed information regarding COVID protocols, requirements, and recommendations.  Have a good evening and a great week.
