This year, families will be able to get a head start on Back to School. DPS will launch the “Best.Year.Ever.” Back-to-School campaign this April to generate excitement about the coming school year. As part of that campaign, from April 8-May 13, DPS is working to ensure that schools are positioned to open with all of the logistics completed before the end of this year as we prepare for the first day of the new 2022-2023 school year. Githens will host an in-person event on Tuesday, April 26. In response to feedback from Principals, there were some changes to the Returning Student Form (now known as the “Back to School Form”) including the timeline, shortened form, and more user-friendly language.
Key components of the form, most of which are required by board policy or state/federal law, include:
Student Handbook Verification
Address and phone number updates
Transportation information (** All students will default to "NO” transportation; the updated information requesting transportation (Yes/No) must be collected fresh this year.)
District policies – technology use of laptops, personal devices, directory information, etc.
As Githens' partners with our families on the Back-to-School form, the goal for us to reach 100% of students with updated information by May 13, 2022. Part of this process is ensuring that all families have a PowerSchool Parent Portal Account. PowerSchool Parent Portal is the official source of student grade information and a convenient way for you to update your most current contact information. DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Use the link (https://www.dpsnc.net/Page/383) provided in the email that accompanies this voice message to navigate the setup process.
A reminder that students are required to be in classrooms, seated, with materials ready, and cell phones powered off at 7:30. Students entering the building after 7:30 will be marked tardy. We still have a lot of students coming to school after 7:30 missing valuable instruction. Scholars must be on time for school.
Githens Middle School will continue to follow COVID-19 protocols in an attempt to minimize and contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The following is a reminder of processes and procedures. Please listen carefully and be mindful of and adhere to the following for the safety of others:
If you’re waiting on the results of a COVID test for yourself, a sibling, or your scholar, please DO NOT send your scholar to school as you should assume they are positive.
Parents must notify the Principal AND grade level Assistant Principal immediately of a positive diagnosis. Please include the following information in your email: the last day present on campus and if they were on campus the entire day, the date symptoms began, the date tested, the date test results confirmed a positive case, bus route information, and the first and last name of any siblings that attend any DPS school and the name of the school.
If your scholar does not feel well today or you know they were around unvaccinated and/or unmasked individuals, keep them home and let them get the rest they need. Please, don’t risk potentially spreading COVID-19 to others by allowing your scholar to "power through" their symptoms.
A child who has tested positive for COVID-19 should be kept at home and must follow the health department’s guidance on isolation requirements.
Masks are required for all students five years of age and older, teachers and staff, and visitors in accordance with recommendations of the CDC, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and the Durham County Department of Health. Please DO NOT send your scholar to Githens without a mask.
That’s all for now. Have a great week!
