Good afternoon Githens families! This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week! Please listen carefully to all details!
Please join me in congratulating Ms. Crystal Cahill on being named Assistant Principal at Githens Middle School during Thursday night’s board meeting! We are also extending congratulations to Ms. Maggie Donnelly on being voted the Githens Beginning Teacher of the Year and Ms. Shlisa Stackhouse on being voted Githens Teacher of the Year! Well deserved honors for these three wonder women!

A reminder that students are required to be in classrooms, seated, with materials ready, and cell phones powered off at 7:30. Students entering the building after 7:30 will be marked tardy. We still have a lot of students coming to school after 7:30 missing valuable instruction. Scholars must be on time for school.
Githens Middle School will continue to follow COVID-19 protocols in an attempt to minimize and contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The following is a reminder of processes and procedures. Please listen carefully and be mindful of and adhere to the following for the safety of others:
If you’re waiting on the results of a COVID test for yourself, a sibling, or your scholar, please DO NOT send your scholar to school as you should assume they are positive.
Parents must notify the Principal AND grade level Assistant Principal immediately of a positive diagnosis. Please include the following information in your email: the last day present on campus and if they were on campus the entire day, the date symptoms began, the date tested, the date test results confirmed a positive case, bus route information, and the first and last name of any siblings that attend any DPS school and the name of the school.
If your scholar does not feel well today or you know they were around unvaccinated and/or unmasked individuals, keep them home and let them get the rest they need. Please, don’t risk potentially spreading COVID-19 to others by allowing your scholar to "power through" their symptoms.
A child who has tested positive for COVID-19 should be kept at home and must follow the health department’s guidance on isolation requirements.
Masks are required for all students five years of age and older, teachers and staff, and visitors in accordance with recommendations of the CDC, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and the Durham County Department of Health. Please DO NOT send your scholar to Githens without a mask.
Finally, we are asking that scholars not bring or have delivered the following items to Githens tomorrow: flowers, candy, balloons, stuffed animals, and any other Valentine’s Day related items. Scholars are not using lockers and there is no place to store these items in classrooms or the main office and it is not our responsibility to do so. If these items make it into the building anyway, please know that we are not responsible for these items and administration and the SRO will not investigate if these items are damaged, popped, stolen, or eaten.
That’s all for now. Have a great week!
