- Sherwood Githens Middle School
Principal's Message 1/30
Good afternoon Githens families! This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week. Please listen carefully to all details.
On Friday, scholars received hard copies of report cards during their core one class. Please note, report cards will show grades for quarters one and two, as well as, semester one. If you have any questions or concerns regarding grades, please contact team leaders to set up parent/teacher conferences. As always, you can view your scholar’s report card through PowerSchool Parent Portal. Information regarding account set up is included in the email that accompanies this phone message. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding grades, please contact your scholar’s team leader to set up an appointment for a parent conference.
Please join me in welcoming our new orchestra teacher, Mr. Mario Castillo, to Githens Middle School as he will begin his position on Thursday, February 3. A special thank you to Ms. Carrie Andrews for her assistance during this transition.
On Tuesday, February 1, we will officially enter into Black History Month. Black History Month is a time to celebrate the many accomplishments of African Americans and recognize their central role in U.S. history, as well as a time to shine a light on the story of the larger Black diaspora. At Githens, we will provide opportunities for our scholars to engage in conversation through various activities throughout the month. A special thanks to Ms. Moore-Sloan for championing this cause.
On Wednesday, February 2, there will be a spring sports parent information meeting via Zoom at 6:00. The link to this meeting is included in the email that accompanies this phone message. TO REQUEST ZOOM LINK https://forms.gle/Fy83VBCKjkVDkKJM7
This week, Githens Middle School reported 4 positive COVID cases, 25 close contacts were identified, and there were zero class closures. Communication to families whose students were identified as close contacts has been completed. If you have not already been personally contacted, it means your student was NOT in close contact with any of the COVID-19 cases. Your student may come to school unless they are feeling sick or exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. Please know we continue to take all precautions necessary to protect the health and safety of our students and staff.
Githens Middle School will continue to follow COVID-19 protocols in an attempt to minimize and contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The following is a reminder of processes and procedures. Please listen carefully and be mindful of and adhere to the following for the safety of others:
If you’re waiting on the results of a COVID test for yourself, a sibling, or your scholar, please DO NOT send your scholar to school as you should assume they are positive.
Parents must notify the Principal AND grade level Assistant Principal immediately of a positive diagnosis. Please include the following information in your email: the last day present on campus and if they were on campus the entire day, the date symptoms began, the date tested, the date test results confirmed a positive case, bus route information, and the first and last name of any siblings that attend any DPS school and the name of the school.
If your scholar does not feel well today or you know they were around unvaccinated and/or unmasked individuals, keep them home and let them get the rest they need. Please, don’t risk potentially spreading COVID-19 to others by allowing your scholar to "power through" their symptoms.
A child who has tested positive for COVID-19 should be kept at home and must follow the health department’s guidance on isolation requirements.
Masks are required for all students five years of age and older, teachers and staff, and visitors in accordance with recommendations of the CDC, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and the Durham County Department of Health. Please DO NOT send your scholar to Githens without a mask.
DPS can ONLY accept a rapid test (not a rapid home test) when a child is sick or symptomatic. Anyone deemed as close contact exposure must have a PCR test 5 days after exposure prior to returning to school. All asymptomatic students must have a PCR test.
That’s all for now. Have a great week!
