Principal's Message 1/23

Good evening Githens families.  This is Dr. Lanier with information regarding remote learning on Monday 1/24.  Please listen carefully to all details.

We have updated our website to provide you with the master schedule for 1/24.  Teachers have also posted this schedule on their Canvas pages.  Students will not attend their Discovery class.  However, students will follow their normal bell schedule beginning at 8:22.  6th grade students will report virtually to their first elective class while 7th and 8th grade students report virtually to their first core class.  All instruction tomorrow will be synchronous and students should click on the Zoom link on each of their teachers’ Canvas pages to access live instruction.  Please note, attendance will be taken.  Please email teachers directly if you have questions regarding specific classes.

----------Weekly Message------------

A reminder that report cards can be viewed through PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Should you have any questions or concerns regarding grades, please contact your scholar’s team leader to set up an appointment for a parent conference.

We are very pleased to announce the official start of our Githens Middle School Academic Incentive Plan!  The purpose of this plan is to ensure our students are learning and growing academically.  Teachers will set academic growth goals for all scholars.  Then, scholars will have the opportunity to earn tickets based on their progress.  Grade level counselors have provided information to scholars such that they have a clear understanding how these tickets can be earned.  Students will be entered into a drawing for prizes and drawings can come at any time!  Prizes include, but are not limited to, the following: Apple Airpods, Beats headphones, and Playstation 4s.  Parents are encouraged to contact grade level administrators and counselors to find out more information about our plan.

In conjunction with the launch of our incentive plan, we will be participating in a Spirit Week on the week of January 24 to January 28!  The following is a breakdown of each day:

  • Monday - Pajama Day (No bonnetts, slippers, shorts, or headwear)

  • Tuesday - Twin Day (Dress alike with your friends)

  • Wednesday - Athleisure Day (Dress in your favorite team gear and/or favorite, appropriate, workout wear)

  • Thursday - Throwback Thursday (A tribute to the 90s.  Wear 90s themed clothing)

  • Friday - Githens Day (Wear any Githens gear or school colors)

Please be sure that all of your students’ outfits are school appropriate and follow school dress code guidelines.  A flyer outlining this information has been posted on our school website as well as classroom Canvas pages.

Githens Middle School will continue to follow COVID-19 protocols in an attempt to minimize and contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  The following is a reminder of processes and procedures.  Please listen carefully and be mindful of and adhere to the following for the safety of others:

  • If you’re waiting on the results of a COVID test for yourself, a sibling, or your scholar,  please DO NOT send your scholar to school as you should assume they are positive.

  • Parents must notify the Principal AND grade level Assistant Principal immediately of a positive diagnosis.  Please include the following information in your email: the last day present on campus and if they were on campus the entire day, the date symptoms began, the date tested, the date test results confirmed a positive case, bus route information, and the first and last name of any siblings that attend any DPS school and the name of the school.

  • If your scholar does not feel well today or you know they were around unvaccinated and/or unmasked individuals, keep them home and let them get the rest they need.  Please, don’t risk potentially spreading COVID-19 to others by allowing your scholar to "power through" their symptoms.

  • A child who has tested positive for COVID-19 should be kept at home and must follow the health department’s guidance on isolation requirements.

  • Masks are required for all students five years of age and older, teachers and staff, and visitors in accordance with recommendations of the CDC, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and the Durham County Department of Health.  Please DO NOT send your scholar to Githens without a mask.

That’s all for now.  Have a great week!
