Good afternoon Githens Raiders! This is Dr. Lanier with important information for the week! Please listen for all details!
Fall sports tryouts officially begin this week! Here is the breakdown of sports, coaches, tryout times, and locations your scholars will need to report upon the conclusion of dismissal.
Boys Soccer – August 30 - Sept. 1 at 3:30 – 5:30pm. Meet in Mr. McElroy’s classroom, trailor (T2)
Cross Country - August 30 - Sept. 1 at 3:30 – 5:30pm. Meet in Mr. Field’s Room (B6), on the 7th grade hall.
Football – August 23 at 3:30 at 5:30pm. Meet in Dr. Murrill’s Room (B3), on the 7th grade hall.
Volleyball – August 30 - Sept. 1 at 3:30 – 5:30pm. Meet in Mrs. Stackhouse’s Room (A7), on the 8th grade hall.
Girls Tennis – September 9 -10 – 3:30 – 5:30pm. Meet in Mrs. Stackhouse’s Room (A7), on the 8th grade hall.
Cheerleading will be announced at a later date. Again, athletes will not be released until dismissal is complete.
Transportation Services is looking to fill bus driver vacancies. If you are licensed to drive a school bus and are looking to help us support our students, please send me your contact information and I will submit your name to our Director of Transportation.
During the first week of school, Assistant Principals met with all students in Social Studies classes regarding behavior expectations, including hallway transitions, mask wearing, dress code, and cell phone use. When possible, please review the information presented to students on our website and discuss with your scholar. If you have specific questions about student expectations, please contact your grade level administrator. Please note that communicated expectations will be enforced and addressed beginning tomorrow, Monday, August 30th. The grade level administrators and counselors are as follows:
6th Grade - Mr. James Carter and Allyse McNeil
7th Grade - Dr. Lori Bruce and Kathleen Murphy
8th Grade - Vivianease Major and Lessa Swift
By now, all scholars should have received a technology parent agreement form for the 2021-2022 school year. All GMS scholars are expected to return this parent agreement. If you would like to review this form online, it is located on our school website. 6th grade scholars and new GMS scholars will not be issued a laptop to take home until the parent agreement has been received. As a reminder, all students that have been issued a DPS laptop should bring their devices fully charged and ready to go each school day.
Any parent who hasn’t signed up for PowerSchool Parent Portal will need to do so as soon as possible. Not only is it the official source of student grade information, it is also the way to update your contact information, i.e. your phone number and email address, in case of emergency. Here’s why that is most important during COVID. If your scholar begins to show signs of symptoms, we are required to notify you and your scholar will have to be picked up immediately. This can’t happen if your contact information isn’t valid. As I have stated previously, DPS has created step by step instructions, as well as video instructions, on how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Use the link (https://www.dpsnc.net/Page/383) provided in this email to navigate the set up process.
Parents, before you arrive at Githens, please know what grade your scholars are in and make sure scholars know your telephone numbers and all important contact information. If you do not have a printed carpool tag, please have your child’s name spelled correctly on a piece of paper before you arrive. It is also helpful to have a transportation plan and communicate with your child your transportation plan in the afternoon to reduce any misunderstandings. Students need to know if you plan to pick them up in the afternoon or if they will be riding the bus home. Please ensure all contact information is up to date in PowerSchool Parent Portal. It is imperative that you are on time to pick up your scholar in the afternoon.
Parents of bus riders can track their scholar’s bus with the “Here Comes the Bus” app. All the information about how to download the app and sign up for a free account can be found by using the link that is provided in the email that accompanies this phone message. If you are requesting that your scholar be dropped off at a different address other than what appears in PowerSchool, you must fill out a Bus Stop Appeal form. Once the form has been turned in to our main office, we will submit the form on your behalf. Please note, submission of appeals does not equate to automatic approval. Currently, transportation is working to ensure all students in our district receive a bus stop and route. The link to this form is also included in the email that accompanies this phone message.
