Parent Message 5/9

Good afternoon Raiders and happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!  This is Dr. Lanier with important items for the week!

Congratulations to Ms. Caroline Brickhouse who has earned the distinction of Durham Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year!  Yet another reminder that Githens is the number one school in DPS!  Ms. Brickhouse will go on to represent Durham Public Schools in the Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year program!  We wish her all the best as she moves forward in this process!

Cohort B, 7th grade, will report for their two day in person rotation tomorrow, May 10.  Cohort C, 8th grade, will only report for one day of in person instruction on Friday, May 14.  Thursday, May 13, is a district teacher workday.  There will be no synchronous or asynchronous instruction for students on Thursday.

A quick reminder regarding state required EOG/EOC testing:

  • For the EOGs, if a student does not take the EOG, there is no academic penalty, i.e. grade and/or retention.

  • For EOC exams, per state law, the score MUST count as 20% of a student's final grade in the course.  The lowest possible score for a completed EOC, taken in person, is a 90.  The lowest possible score, if the EOC is not taken, is a 50.

  • For scheduling purposes, virtual students who need transportation will test on the following dates which are all Wednesdays:

    • ELA: May 19

    • Math: May 26

    • 8th grade Science: June 2

  • The rest of our scholars who are testing will test with their cohorts on their scheduled cohort days.  This will include virtual students who do not need school transportation:

    • 6th grade:

      • ELA: Tuesday, May 18

      • Math: Thursday, May 27

      • Make Up Testing: Friday, May 28

    • 7th grade:

      • ELA: Thursday, May 20

      • Math: Friday, May 21

      • Make Up Testing: Tuesday, June 1

    • 8th grade:

      • ELA: Monday, May 24

      • Math: Tuesday, May 25

      • Science: Thursday, June 3

      • Make Up Testing: Friday, June 4

EOG Test Prep strategy information and ELA and Math test prep booklets that can be used at home to prepare students for the End of Grade Test are still available for pick up.  We will also post the document on our main website.  Feel free to come through the carpool lane if you are interested in having this information to assist your scholar.

A reminder that Ignite Online Academy will be the virtual learning option for next school year and will enroll students through a commitment form HERE.  Ignite is an excellent option for families who are enthusiastic about online learning, are homeschooling currently, or have already made their decision to enroll in online learning next school year!  Families that commit through the form would officially move their placement from their base or magnet school to Ignite for the entire academic year.  All families who wish to receive virtual learning must use the form to sign up for Ignite.  The link to the commitment form is included in the email that accompanies this phone message.

Everyone have a fantastic week!
