At its October 21 meeting, the Durham Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved designating Nov. 12 as a Mental Health Awareness Day for students and staff. All students will have a non-instructional day and staff will have the option to work remotely.

“We acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our students and staff over the past few months and know that while school may be back in session, many things have changed for our school communities due to the pandemic,” said Board Chair Bettina Umstead. “The mental health and well-being of our students and staff is a priority, and this day represents our district’s commitment to supporting wellness for all.”

Adjustments have been made to traditional, specialty, and year-round calendars to reflect DPS’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Athletic events, practices, and extracurricular activities will operate as normal.  Schools are closed for students and staff on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

“Our people are our greatest asset,” said Superintendent Pascal Mubenga. “In taking time to recognize the mental health of our staff, we are also honoring their dedication to educating our students during this unique school year.” 

Social-emotional learning (SEL) resources for students will be available at Embrace.dpsnc.net on Nov. 12. Additionally, SEL activities will be made available to staff to encourage mindfulness, movement, and self-care.
