Student Art at NCCU Museum
The North Carolina Central University Art Museum presents “Durham's Finest,” an exhibition of outstanding student artwork from Durham Public Schools, January 7-26. In this select show, four two-dimensional pieces of art represent each school as well as three-dimensional art. This is the DPS's only district-wide art exhibit, showing the progression and artistic development of our students from kindergarten through high school. By hosting the exhibit, NCCU Art Museum gives the students the rare opportunity to see their artwork in a real museum setting!
The opening floating reception is Sunday, January 7, from 2-4pm, with recognitions for grades 6-12 from 2-3 p.m. and grades K-5 from 3-4 p.m., for the student artists and their families, art teachers, school officials, and board members from both DPS and NCCU. Welcoming remarks and recognitions will be made at 2:25 for secondary students and 3:25 for elementary students by Kenneth Rodgers, Director of the NCCU Art Museum, and Mary Casey, Director of K-12 Arts Education for DPS. The Riverside Opus Quartet, under the direction of Ms. Sara Moore, and a string quartet from Lakewood Montessori, under the direction of Ms. Jane Francis, will perform. The reception is free and open to the public.
After the reception, “Durham’s Finest” can be viewed until January 26 during the museum's regular operating schedule: Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm and Sunday, 2–4 p.m. The museum is closed on Saturdays, Mondays and university holidays. Group visits may be arranged. (919-530-5079 or krodgers@nccu.edu)
