Durham Public Schools acknowledges with sadness the passing of Mr. Clarke A. Egerton, Jr., a longtime employee of DPS.

“The entire DPS family and I are deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Egerton’s passing,” said Dr. Pascal Mubenga, DPS Superintendent. “Mr. Egerton served as an educator, mentor and friend for thousands within our school system through his career and his legacy and memory will continue to live on through those who knew him.”

Egerton started his career in education at John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, NC, where he taught instrumental music and Social Studies. In 1956, he took a teaching position at Lincoln High School in Chapel Hill, NC. In 1967, Egerton began working at Hillside High School, the same school he graduated from, teaching instrumental music, marching band, flag corps, rifle corps, majorettes, symphonic bands, and concert bands at Hillside. Additionally, he taught two classes at Holton Junior High, which continued until 1970.

In 1997, when Egerton retired from DPS, he recruited former DPS Board of Education member Xavier Cason to take over as the band director at Hillside.

“Mr. Egerton was focused on driving the idea and the reality of excellence,” said Cason. “The pride that he instilled in the band and the community continues on to this day.”
