Burton Elementary is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, whose students are encouraged to be well-rounded global citizens who explore the world around them through an inquiry-based approach to learning. Burton is also a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School and North Carolina Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Exemplar School, demonstrating the school community’s commitment to excellence in academic and social-emotional learning.
Burton’s principal, Dr. Kimberly Ferrell, would have been surprised with the news at the annual MSA National Conference had it been held this year following the outbreak of COVID-19. She will be recognized at the next conference in Clark County, Nevada, in April.
“Dr. Ferrell is one of our shining stars as a principal, but she would be the first to tell you this achievement is due to her teachers, staff, students, and the school community surrounding them,” said Dr. Pascal Mubenga, superintendent of Durham Public Schools. “We could not be more proud of all of them."
To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a trained panel of readers. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
