Drivers Education Suspended Indefinitely

Durham Public Schools will begin the 2020-21 school year under Plan C, with remote/online instruction for the first nine weeks of school.  The staff has been working diligently to find solutions to program offerings while maintaining protocols that ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

In collaboration with the DPS COVID-19 Committee and DPS Spark Reopening Task Force, the decision has been made to suspend the student Driver’s Education program indefinitely. Once conditions improve and are favorable for our students and instructors, we will provide details for a safe and efficient restart to the program. This will work in conjunction with the district’s plan to safely phase students and teachers into in-person learning. Students who have completed the classroom portion of Driver’s Education as of spring 2020 and are awaiting “in-car” instruction, will be given first priority in completing this portion of the program. We are currently developing an online course for the classroom portion of Driver’s Education that is tentatively scheduled to launch during the first semester of this school year. Details about registration for the online course will be provided as soon as they are available.

DPS will continue to monitor public health conditions and communicate to the Board of Education and families with important updates.
