DPS Delays Start of Athletic Workouts

Due to continuing concerns about COVID-19, and in consultation with principals, athletic directors, and coaches, Durham Public Schools has decided to delay the opening of athletic workouts to no earlier than July 20.

Although the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has not rendered a decision about resuming sports in the fall, it has issued guidelines allowing schools to begin restrictive workouts this summer. DPS considered allowing fall sports high school athletes to return to campus for voluntary workouts, but athletic directors and coaches determined that it is too soon to safely and efficiently hold the workouts.

DPS is continuing to evaluate when to resume athletic activities. Any resumption will be conducted with the health and safety of our student athletes and staff in mind and in compliance with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) Reopening of Sports/Activities Summer Guidelines.  DPS will also follow guidance from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Durham County Department of Public Health.
